Job Title: Major Incident Room (MIR) - Casework Officer - 01

Salary: The starting salary is £38,926, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.

The salary is broken down as £35,998 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £38,523. Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Complex Investigation Team within Specialist Crime of the Metropolitan Police. 

We are looking for casework officers to manage and record evidential and non-evidential material in major investigations using the HOLMES (Home Office Large Major Enquiry System) platform, ensuring accuracy and compliance with disclosure requirements. The role supports Complex Investigation Team detectives in progressing cases through the criminal justice process, including trial preparation and court proceedings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive, read and assess documentation entering the investigation.
  • Identify and prioritise lines of enquiry
  • Prioritise and raise actions to task investigators
  • Quality assure documentation entering the investigation, raise actions to rectify.
  • Ensure documents are stored and marked according to GSC guidance.
  • Attend SIO briefings / brief SIO on investigations.
  • Prioritise workloads ensuring actions are raised and returned in given timescales.
  • Assess and mark documents for registration highlighting content to be indexed by HOLMES indexers.
  • Record summary of documents.
  • Work with case officer to build comprehensive case files.

Who we're looking for:

  • Knowledge of police disclosure obligations and legal processes (e.g. Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act, Police and Criminal Evidence Act, Children’s Act, Human Rights Act).
  • Knowledge of multi-agency safeguarding responsibilities and information-sharing requirements.
  • Proficient in using HOLMES (versions 17 - 19) for indexing, registering, and managing investigation material. Must have experience as a Holmes reader/receiver.
  • Able to interpret, summarise, and present complex information clearly to support investigative decision-making.
  • Skilled in handling sensitive and distressing material with professionalism and resilience.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills to meet deadlines in high-pressure environments.
  • Confident in engaging with victims, witnesses, and professional stakeholders via phone, email, and face-to-face communication.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and police systems such as CONNECT and IIP (Integrated Information Platform).
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify errors and omissions in investigative submissions.
  • Strong written and verbal English skills, able to provide clear and precise direction.
  • Confidence to challenge experienced detectives where evidence does not meet the standard required in serious and complex investigations.
  • Experience working in a Major Incident Room or similar investigation support environment.
  • Experience gathering, analysing, and evaluating intelligence and information from multiple sources.
  • Experience of working on serious and complex investigations
  • Experience identifying reasonable lines of enquiry to support Complex Investigation Team cases.
  • Experience preparing case files and liaising with the CPS and courts.
  • Experience working collaboratively with multi-agency partners and legal representatives in complex cases.
  • Completion of at least one HOLMES training course: Indexer, Reader, or Receiver.
  • Willingness to complete further HOLMES and other relevant system training as required.
