Superintendent - Uniform Operations

Chief Constable Mark Roberts invites applications for the role of Superintendent – Uniform Operations.  We welcome interest from substantive Superintendents seeking a lateral transfer and suitably qualified Chief Inspectors aspiring to promotion.

Cheshire Constabulary is a high-performing police force that has been praised for its excellent performance in keeping people safe, reducing crime and giving victims an effective service. Our PEEL (Police effectiveness, efficiency and legitimacy) Inspection Report by HMICFRS has shown that the force has made significant improvements during the past three years, and the results put the Constabulary amongst the best performing forces in the country.

The successful candidate will lead a large, complex command area ensuring operational readiness and compliance with legal frameworks and policing objectives.  This includes strategic leadership for Uniformed Operations, planning and directing responses to major incidents and critical events, and acting as the central point of reference for operational support, specialist services across the force, and ensuring the forces’ operational readiness for major events and civil contingencies, specialist command portfolios and acting as the hub for resilience and mutual aid requests across the force.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Command

Prepare the force for major incidents and public events; liaise with other forces and agencies to ensure a co-ordinated multi-agency response; oversee specialist portfolios such as POPS (Public Order Public Safety), search operations, and Taser.

Strategic Leadership

Develop and implement force policy, procedures, and strategies for uniform operations; ensure compliance with College of Policing standards and accreditation frameworks; drive continuous improvement and accountability within the department.

Community and Partnership Engagement

Represent the force at local, regional, and national forums; maintain strong links with statutory and voluntary agencies to address shared concerns; promote public confidence through effective consultation and engagement.

Resource and Risk Management

Manage staffing structures, including specialist sergeants and operational planning teams; oversee risk registers for operational resilience; ensure financial efficiency and compliance with force budgets.

The application process for this process requires you to complete an application form, which consists of a 1000-word personal statement demonstrating the skills, knowledge and experience that you will bring to this role as well as 2 competency-based evidential statements of no more than 500 words per statement against the competencies We collaborate and We support and inspire. Your application will be assessed against Level 3 of the CVF and must make reference to experience gained within the last 2 years. You are strongly advised to read the CVF for the role of Superintendent (Level 3) prior to applying. 

Officers considering applying should be initiating conversations with their line managers and believe they are fully operationally competent and ready for promotion. A Line Manager 250-word supporting statement, confirming operational competence and readiness for promotion is also required.

Your application form will also require Chief Superintendent or Head of Department Endorsement, and all evidence provided must be verified and dated.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Confirmed in the rank of Superintendent for lateral transfer or substantive Chief Inspector seeking promotion.
  • Are not subject to any sanctions or actions in relation to the Unsatisfactory Performance and/ or Attendance Procedure (UPP)
  • Are not subject to any live PSD investigations and/ or all levels of formal sanction or action as a result of an investigation or complaint
  • Are not subject to any live complaints or misconduct proceedings
  • Comply with the force criteria for sickness – this is 9 days absence and/ or 4 occasions within a rolling 12 month-period
  • Are willing/able to be posted in any post within the force area
  • Will obtain operational competence as a firearms commander and/or a public order commander as well as technical accreditation (depending on their posting)
  • Have demonstrated readiness for promotion, as evidenced in your Performance & Talent Conversation and Talent Grid
  • Are operationally competent and ready for promotion to the rank of Superintendent and are performing at Level 3 of the CVF
