Chief Inspector Promotion Process
Chief Constable Mark Roberts is seeking to recruit to a number of Chief Inspector positions with applications sought from high performing substantive Chief Inspectors on lateral transfer or suitably qualified Inspectors who would like to be considered for promotion to the rank of Chief Inspector.
This process is now open and closes at 09:00am Monday 26th January 2026.
Cheshire is a high performing police force that has been praised for its excellent performance in keeping people safe, reducing crime and giving victims an effective service. Our PEEL (Police effectiveness, efficiency and legitimacy) Inspection Report by HMICFRS has shown that the force has made significant improvements during the past three years, and the results put the Constabulary amongst the best performing forces in the country.
Cheshire has retained its position as the safest place in the North-West according to the most recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which reflects the dedication of our staff and officer in protecting the public. Latest figures show that Cheshire has the lowest crime rate in the North-West compared with the other police forces in the region, with 69.8 offences per 1,000 people. This is well below the North-West average of 91.9 and the national average of 87.2.
Successful candidates will need to be highly motivated leaders with an established track record of performance in an ever-changing environment.
We are seeking individuals who are operationally competent with the ability to lead teams, manage demand and effectively problem solve through continued innovation to support us on this continued journey of performance improvement.
The application process for the Chief Inspector promotion process will require you to complete an application form, which consists of 4 competency-based statements against the competencies We analyse critically; We collaborate; We take ownership, and We are innovative and open minded.
Each statement must be no more than 500 words and will be assessed against Level 2 of the CVF making reference to experience gained within the last 2 years. You are strongly advised to read the CVF for the role of Chief Inspector (Level 2) prior to applying.
Given the competitive nature of this promotion process, prospective applicants are encouraged to proactively engage with their line managers, who are required to confirm operational competence and readiness for promotion through a 250-word supporting statement, referencing your Performance & Talent Conversation and Talent Grid discussion. Please ensure you line manager has sufficient time to complete their supporting statement, as this is a vital part of your application.
To be eligible to apply for this promotion process, you must:
- Be a substantive Inspector in line with Police (Promotion) Regulations 1996 and from within a home office force.
- Are not subject to any sanctions or actions in relation to the Unsatisfactory Performance and/ or Attendance Procedure (UPP).
- Are not subject to any live PSD investigations and/ or all levels of formal sanction or action as a result of an investigation or complaint
- Are not subject to any live complaints or misconduct proceedings.
- Have demonstrated readiness for promotion, as evidenced in their Performance & Talent Conversation and are operationally competent and ready for promotion to the rank of Chief Inspector and are performing at Level 2 of the CVF.
- Comply with Cheshire Constabulary’s force criteria for sickness – this is 9 days absence or less within a rolling 12-month period.
- Are willing/ able to be posted in any post within the force area
Your application form will also require Superintendent or Head of Department Endorsement, and all evidence provided must be verified and dated.
