Statement of expectation for the role:

City of London Police is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Detective Sergeant to join its Major Crime Team, leading complex investigations into the most serious offences including homicide, attempted murder, serious sexual offences and other major crime.

City of London Police expect Detective Sergeants within the Major Crime Team to demonstrate the highest standards of investigative leadership, professional judgement and ethical decision- making when managing serious and complex crime investigations.

The post holder will be expected to lead by example, maintaining public confidence through integrity, compassion, accountability and an unwavering commitment to victim focused policing

As a Detective Sergeant on the Major Crime Team, you will:

  • Supervise and manage complex & serious crime investigations, ensuring enquiries are proportionate, ethical and evidence led.
  • Provide effective leadership and direction to detectives and police staff, setting clear investigative strategies and priorities.
  • Support and advise the Senior Investigating Officer (SIO), contributing to decision making and investigative planning.
  • Ensure compliance with investigative legislation, disclosure obligations and criminal procedure.
  • Maintain the highest standards of victim and witness care, in line with National guidance.
  • Identify investigative opportunities through effective use of intelligence, forensic evidence, digital & financial material and partner engagement.
  • Manage performance, welfare and professional development of staff within the team.
  • Prepare high-quality investigative documentation, reports and briefings for senior leaders and partner agencies.
  • You will be supported with the required training and courses to enable you to progress in these roles should you be successful.

The role is predominantly London based, both office and deployed in support of operations.

Vetting level required: SC/ MV

Location: Bishopsgate Police Station

Salary: National payscale

Essential Criteria

  • A substantive PIP 2 qualified Detective Sergeant.
  • Demonstrable experience of conducting or supervising serious and complex investigations.
  • Strong understanding of investigative decision- making, risk management and disclosure.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills in high pressure environments.
  • Flexible and prepared to work extended shifts in cases of operational necessity
  • Ability to apply the College of Policing Code of Ethics in operational decision making.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience working within a Major Crime or Serious Crime investigation department.
  • Experience of managing sensitive or high-risk investigations.
  • Knowledge of national major crime governance, including HOLMES & major incident
  • Experience of multi- agency working and partnership engagement.
