The Roads Policing Unit is a unit measured on professionalism and dedication to achieve outstanding results and safer communities.

Applicants are invited to join the Roads Policing Unit who take an investigative and diligent outlook and attitude on policing. It is important that new applicants work hard to become a representative workforce for the communities in which they work across Manchester and the North West Region.

As a Constable on the Roads Policing Unit you could work from sites at Tameside, Eccles or Whitefield, delivering performance in line with the Safer Transport Strategy, alongside the wider Safer Transport Team. The GMP Safer Transport objectives are:

• Reduce the number of fatal and serious injury road traffic collisions on the roads of Greater Manchester.

• Ensure Safer Roads, free from harm.

• Enable Secure Roads, free from the threat of serious crime and terrorism by arresting offenders and seizing their vehicles.

• Create Efficient Roads that promote public confidence and satisfaction.

• Working with partners we aim to improve safety and security across public transport, offering reassurance to passengers.

You will be expected to have the below principles as part of your personal character and reflect your approach to being a police officer.

Responsible - As part of the Roads Policing Team you will often be faced with tough situations to overcome where people will look to you for support and guidance. By demonstrating credibility, resilience, and workplace confidence you will be expected to have the highest standards of professionalism.

Self-Manage - You will be given the trust and responsibility to work alone and not always be led by radio tasking. You are given a level of responsibility to self-generate your own workload and be expected to respond to tasking provided by supervision. Expectations from supervisors are you will work proactively to identify road related criminal activity and offending.

Decision Maker - You need to be confident in your decisions and respond quickly to new information. You will be a person who to assesses risks quickly and effectively, using your judgement and be willing to take and own a decision based on this assessment. You need to be able to use the NDM in accordance with any actions you take.

Problem Solver - You will need to be able to think laterally as to how to overcome problems. You must be curious, objective and willing to obtain and develop information and intelligence across different information sources and weigh up options to investigate Roads Policing Matters.

Part of a Small Team - You will be part of a team based at one of the forces three roads policing bases. You will need to be flexible, amicable and be prepared to help your colleagues in a small work environment. You will work collaboratively with partner departments within the Safer Transport Team and District colleagues building important relationships in order to achieve safer communities.

Knowledge - Roads Policing is an area of policing recognised as a specialism. You must be able to share this knowledge and have the ability to adapt to changes in legislation. You will also be relied upon to provide guidance and direction to colleagues and families when dealing with incidents.
