Location: The officer would be able to work nationally/remotely. It is required they attend to Guildhall Yard East Police Station when the business requires.

Description of Department:
The NPCC Cyber Crime Team – Crypto Currency & Darkweb is a national capability that support UK policing in combating criminal activity involving blockchain technologies and illicit online networks. The team is responsible for conducting national-level procurement of blockchain analytical tools, ensuring that police forces across the UK have access to the specialist technology required to investigate cryptocurrency-enabled crime and dark web activity. This work ensures consistency, capability and efficiency across forces / ROCU’s when responding to emerging digital threats.
In addition, the team develops and delivers specialist cryptocurrency training, designing and maintaining accredited courses that build investigative knowledge and operational competence. It also produces detailed procedural guidance, setting national standards and best-practice frameworks to ensure compliant, lawful and effective use of specialist techniques. This provides officers and staff with clear, practical direction when dealing with complex virtual asset and dark web investigations.
The team also develops advance threat intelligence packages in close partnership with private sector organisations, leveraging their specialist expertise to produce high-quality, actionable intelligence across the cryptocurrency ecosystem, the dark web, the deep web and the clear web. In support of this work, the team develops communications intelligence and conducts comprehensive intelligence checks, ensuring that all activity is lawful, proportionate and intelligence-ed. This approach enables UK policing to benefit from cutting-edge industry insight while maintaining robust governance and delivering timely, reliable intelligence to frontline investigators.
The application and interview will be tested under Level 2 of the College of Policing Competency and Values Framework (attached).
Role Purpose
The purpose of this role is to lead and coordinate the development of high-quality national intelligence products relations to cryptocurrency, the dark web, the deep web and the clear web, in support of UK policing. The post holder will be responsible for supervising a multidisciplinary team of detective, researches and analysts, providing operational direction and professional oversight to ensure that all intelligence packages are produced to a consistently hight standard, are quality assured and meeting national requirements and governance frameworks.
The role will involve managing and maintaining strong working relationships with private sector partners, including chairing and contributing to regular meetings to ensure external providers are aligned with operational objectives. The post holder will provide clear direction and guidance to focus work on priority threat areas and emerging risks. They will also be responsible for presenting and briefing regions and forces across the UK through a two-weekly national forum, driving the adoption and effective use of the intelligence products produced by the team.
In addition, the role will have responsibility for overseeing performance monitoring and statistical reporting to demonstrate impact and value, while actively identifying new opportunities in cryptocurrency and dark web investigations. This includes horizon scanning for emerging technologies, tools and investigative processes, and shaping the team’s strategic direction to ensure UK policing remains at the forefront of capability and innovation in this rapidly involving threat landscape.
The post holder will also represent the team at national conference and sector-wide events, acting as a credible subject-matter expert for UK Policing. They will prepare and deliver high-quality presentations that clearly articulate our priorities, insight's, and innovations, ensuring the team’s work is effectively communicated and influential within the national policing landscape.
Essential criteria:
-Advanced expertise in cryptocurrency track and tracing, with a proven track record of delivering effective investigative outcomes.
-Undertaken a nationally recognised cryptocurrency seizure course.
-In-depth understanding of sensitive policing tactics and their appropriate operational use.
-Strong working knowledge of the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA) framework and its application within complex investigations.
-Detailed awareness of dark-net market vendors, platforms, and criminal methodologies.
-Proficiency in using threat-analysis tools to assess risk, identify patterns, and support intelligence development.
-Significant experience collaborating with private-sector partners to enhance investigative capabilities and operational outcomes.
-Demonstrated ability to build, support, and develop a high-performing team while maintaining strong internal and external working relationships.
-Proven capability to generate new ideas, propose innovative approaches, and contribute to improved ways of working.
-Able to operate with a high degree of flexibility and minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
-Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the confidence to represent the team at national forums.
-Willingness and flexibility to travel when required to support operational and organisational needs.
