Chief Superintendent Promotion
Applications are invited from internal and external substantive Superintendents on promotion, as well as transfer opportunities for external substantive Chief Superintendents.
Applicants must be suitably experienced, competent and credible for immediate promotion to rank of Chief Superintendent in the West Midlands Police.
In all but exceptional circumstances, candidates must have a minimum of 2 years’ substantive promotion to the rank of Superintendent and have demonstrated effective leadership across two different command responsibilities at this rank.
Requirements
To be successful in these roles you must have real strengths in:
- Operational Command. Delivering complex frontline operational policing, including the identification and management of critical incidents, the planning and commanding of complex events and operations and relentless focus on the sustained delivery of outcomes for the public.
- Leading organisational change and embracing innovative ways of working, to achieve our vision of being recognised as a police service that is big enough to cope with everything that is asked of us, whilst showing we are small enough to care about the things that really matter to our communities.
- Motivating, developing and unlocking the potential of large and diverse teams, to create an inclusive environment where everyone is committed to the delivery of a service, we are proud of.

External Applicants:
External applicants must complete the questions below on the application form:
- Please confirm which Police Force you are currently serving with
- Please confirm your current substantive rank
- Please confirm details of your current role
- Applicants must not have any current PSD sanctions
- Please include your last 5 years’ posting history on your application and your date of substantive promotion. This can be added in the ‘Previous Employment’ section on your application.
- Please include details of your qualifications that relate to firearms command, public order command, PIP Investigation and any other command responsibilities including regional and national command responsibilities.
Application Assessment Question
Please answer the following question, ‘Please demonstrate how you have the necessary substantive experience, operational competence and leadership credibility for immediate promotion to the rank of Chief Superintendent in West Midlands Police’ (no more than 750 words). Please attach this in the section titled, ‘Supporting Documents’.
The Selection Process:
The section process will consist of the following stages:
- Application form questionnaire and written evidence submission. This will be used for shortlisting
- Short listed candidates will be invited to a People Panel which is made up from our community partners.
- The main interview will be in front of the Deputy Chief Constable and Chief Constable which will last approximately 1 hour.
- Candidates will be asked to deliver a 10-minute presentation followed by probing questions, and an interview.
