Description of Department:
The Public Protection Unit is a small department that relies heavily on teamwork and strong communication skills. Investigations require attention to detail; strong victim focus and collaboration with other departments to be successful. The types of crime we deal with can be challenging but the work is varied, interesting and incredibly rewarding.
The Unit deals with the investigation of most crime types where the victim is vulnerable, coordinates the safeguarding of these victims and is the point of contact for multi-agency working and risk-management.
PPU officers specialise in the investigation of the following areas:
- Rape & Serious Offences
- Domestic Abuse, Stalking and domestic harassment,
- Hate crime
- Child Protection, abuse and exploitation
- Modern slavery and human trafficking
- Honour Based Violence, Forced Marriage and FGM
- Sudden Childhood/Infant Death Investigations
- Risk assessment and management are key parts of public protection. They are done in close collaboration with our DSs and DI to ensure officers are supported.
Purpose of the Role:
The majority of officer’s time will be spent investigating serious and complex and vulnerability-based crimes. Officers will also interview prisoners in custody cases within the PPU remit.
PPU officers support the DSs by investigating referrals made by social services or other partner agencies, such as child protection cases.
The successful officer will be involved with multi-agency working to support the vulnerable such as DA victims or exploited children, managing violent and sexual offenders, and proactive and educational initiatives designed to reduce crime.

- The candidate should have a passion for, and proven track record in, investigation.
- Must be enthusiastic, victim focussed and be able to operate under pressure dealing with high risk and emotive cases
- Excellent communication skills.
- An ability to manage a case load in a calm, efficient and organised fashion
- Be able to engage colleagues, partners and victims in a sensitive, patient and impartial manner
- A professional, resilient and ‘can do’ attitude to the service

- Willingness to learn and be an effective, committed team member within a successful unit.
- Flexibility around working hours where operationally required.
- Be prepared to commit to a minimum of two/three years in the role due to the high cost of training PPU staff.
