Job Title: RaSP Security Control Room Operator (SCR)
Salary: The starting salary is £41,184, which includes allowances of £2928 plus a 20% shift allowance.
The salary is broken down as £31,880 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £34,108. Plus, a 20% shift disturbance allowance, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.
Location: The role is based at either Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace. There may be voluntary opportunities to deploy to Scotland to cover Palace of Holyrood house, Balmoral Castle, Birkhall and Castle of Mey. You may be required to work away from your usual place of work under business continuity however advance notice will be given.
Introduction:
The Metropolitan Police has responsibility for the protection and security of a number of Royal sites in London and Windsor. We need control room operators to join our team providing 24-hour coverage working 12 hour shifts. You’ll be working closely with Police Officers as part of a security and protection operation.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the department responsible for providing static and close protection for the Royal Family at some of the most iconic sites in the world.
You will be involved in maintaining the security of iconic royal sites; and members of the Royal Family and their visiting guests: through the monitoring of technical and human security measures. You will provide effective radio communications to colleagues and an appropriate response to incidents: often deemed Critical and which can lead to global media coverage. You will need to react quickly to fast-changing situations within this firearms department and make timely decisions to ensure the safety of the Principals, public and colleagues.
You’ll be representing both the Met and the Royal Household so you will need to be polite, smart and able to engage with a range of customers including VIP’s.
Considering the location and partners with whom you will be working, you will also need to be reliable, discrete and trustworthy with the ability to communicate professionally and diplomatically at all levels within the organisation as well as an ability to remain calm in sometimes stressful situations.
On joining, you will be expected to sign a Confidentiality Agreement.
Role Profile:
Royalty and Specialist Protection (RaSP) is responsible for the static protection of Royal Residences in London, Windsor and Scotland – a high profile and hugely significant operation, in the national interest. Beyond this static operation, RaSP also provide armed and unarmed close protection to a range of high profile principals, at home and abroad.
The Residential Protection Department has teams based at both Windsor and London who provide static protection in the form of armed protection through the deployment of Authorised Firearms Officers (AFO’s) and manage access control to Royal Residences through the deployment of Civilian Security Officers (CSO’s). These teams work at Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace or St James Palace (currently AFO’s only).
The residential Protection teams are made up of:
- Duty Officer/Inspector x 1
- Sergeants
- Authorised Firearms Officers
- Control room supervisors and Operators
- Civilian Security Officers
Role Purpose:
Why - The purpose of the role of to maintain security of Principals and the Sterility of Royal Residences.
How – Monitoring of cameras and alarms across the site, escalating potential threats to section sergeant and or duty officer. Record all decisions and coordinate with other police asset and emergency services in the response to incidents.
Full Time/Part Time:
Full time, 36 hours per week excluding breaks. 20% Shift Disturbance Allowance for those on 12 hour shifts days and nights.
Agile Working:
The role is classed as an operational role with the requirement for the member of staff to be deployed at the location. There is unlikely to be opportunities for agile working.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain the Security of the site and manage protected movements in and out of residences.
- Ensure CAD incidents are fully updated with all relevant information and shared when appropriate
- Ensure the relevant dispatch channels are actively monitored and facilitated at all times
- Manage incidents that occur throughout the shift, liaising with the Controller and acting on their direction. Ensure that incidents are properly recorded on CAD.
- Undertake continual risk assessments to assess the scale and potential development of incidents and escalate where appropriate
- Monitor all technical and personnel security measures and investigate any activations or incidents
- Report all relevant faults and assist in coordinating routine checks of technical measures
- Effectively handle, resolve and report issues raised by Principals, the Royal Household, and Home Office partners; as well as members of the public and MPS colleagues
- Carry out regular camera sweeps and proactively look for suspicious activity.
- Operators must assist the Controller with their responsibilities as directed and many of the tasks given to the Controller may be delegated to Operators if appropriate. SCR staff must work as a team and no critical activity should be delayed.
- Be prepared to work from an alternative location when there is a Business Continuity or training need.
