Job Title: Parts Manager - Fleet Services

Salary: The starting salary is £47,060, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.

The salary is broken down as £44,132 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £52,652.  Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

The police vehicle fleet is an important physical asset. It enables officers and staff to do their job, carries key equipment required, and provides safe transportation for the public / prisoners.

The complex needs of modern policing requires a wide range of vehicle types. We operate a fleet of over 5,200 assets on the road and river, as well as over 1,000 pedal cycles. London is the most complex and diverse city in the UK, and our fleet is reflective of that. We currently have over 220 different types of vehicles supporting all operational commands including armed response vehicles, HGVs, patrol cars, motorbikes and pedal cycles. 

Customers can be broadly grouped into three strategic pillars – Frontline Policing, Met Ops & Performance, and Counter Terrorism / Specialist Operations. Collectively this covers pan London requirements as well as national CT responsibilities. 

The overall fleet requirements and volumes are owned and governed by operational leaders at the Strategic Fleet Board. Operational teams are accountable for the volume of fleet required to undertake their roles, and Fleet Services support and enable effective decision making through provision of information and technical / industry knowledge. 

Key responsibilities 

  • Overall Workshop Support - Support the Operations Manager / Senior Operations Manager and Workshop Supervisors in the effective running of the workshop, supporting initiatives to improve performance of the workshop
  • Parts Management – Lead team of Parts / Stores staff on one or more workshop sites, ensuring that those individuals are clear on their roles and able to perform to a high level. Ensure that the workshops have the parts to support effective day-to-day running, ensuring that the stock of parts and consumables is kept to the correct level. Ensure requests for parts and materials are dealt with promptly by the team
  • Technical advice / guidance – provide guidance and advice to the team, to ensure that manufacturer technical information is understood and the correct parts are ordered. 
  • Stock trends – Regularly monitor stock trends with a view to increasing / decreasing stock levels and recommending changes, tie in with overall Parts management approach in Fleet Services as a whole. 
  •  MPS Systems – Ensure data / information is recorded correctly, highlight any errors in the core data and work with other teams to solve not only the current errors but also processes / ways of working to ensure they do not happen again
  • Reports – produce various management information / reports to help show what is required on the fleet, any areas not delivering in line with plans, and potential improvements 
  • Performance management – Line management responsibility for a set number of individuals. Undertake performance management of all service areas to ensure processes are working effectively; identify, analyse and take action on issues and implement review points to improve performance when appropriate. Identify failure demand and signs of process waste and implement new processes to support continuous improvement
  • Individual training / development – ensure that individuals across the team have clear development plans in place and support individuals to identify, book, prepare for and attend training.

  • Projects / Changes - Take responsibility for change initiatives that impact on the Parts teams, executing concurrent projects to a high standard.  Responsible for gathering requirements for potential solutions or mapping existing processes. Ensure implementation of change activity to processes are completed effectively and that related training and communication to customers and employees are done in a timely manner.
