Job Title: Senior Data Scientist

Salary: The starting salary is £60,893, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.

The salary is broken down as £57,965 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £63,230 Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Location: The primary Met Location for this role is either Lambeth, Sidcup or Hendon. Travel across the Met Estate, to attend meetings as required by the business, is expected.

Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT)

The mission of Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) is to provide the Met with information (and specifically data), communications and technology to help frontline officers and Met staff do their jobs more efficiently, in order to deliver the New Met for London plan. In other words, DDaT is about “passionately delivering trusted technology for precise data driven policing”.

As well as keeping up to speed with developments in technology and making recommendations for new equipment and systems that will help modernise policing, DDaT also comprises the Data Office which:

  • Owns and drives the data compliance and analytics agenda.
  • Brings together the accountabilities that are currently dispersed across the Met business areas.
  • Consolidates and further develops existing Met data and insight services.
  • Enables data sharing and collaboration to serve the public and external partners.

Job Purpose

As a senior data scientist in the Data Science team, you are an expert in your field and ready to engage with the business to understand their needs and identify the most appropriate response. You have the responsibility for managing and delivering projects, maintaining the existing products and identifying new opportunities.

Our roles are aligned to the HMG DDaT Capability Framework, and this role relates to a Principal Data Scientist.

At this role level, you will:

  • have a broad knowledge of data science techniques, use cases and potential impact, as well as the tools and technologies
  • have extensive experience in scoping, designing and delivering data science outputs and products
  • work collaboratively with a range of experts in support of organisational objectives
  • communicate effectively and challenge delivery plans and priorities
  • appreciate and understand data ethics, data preparation and manipulation
  • appreciate and understand delivery methods, and how to deliver supported solutions at scale
  • be a Subject Matter Expert on ethical use of AI and AI–enabled technologies

Key Role Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of Data Science products across the whole project lifecycle
  • Engage with senior stakeholders to understand business needs and translate these into technical requirements
  • Manage, mentor and develop data scientists in the team
  • Build relationships across forces and external partners to promote knowledge sharing and re-use of products
  • Provide advice and assurance on new project plans and engage with vendors to understand offerings
  • Present at conferences as a representative of the team
  • Optimise product suite for a cloud architecture
  • Engage across internal teams to align required project resources as necessary and ensure required data are fit for purpose

Vetting Clearance

This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) level before taking up the post
