South Wales Police is the largest police force in Wales, serving a population of approximately 1.3 million people across an area of 2,117 square miles. As an ICT Technical Project Manager, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth delivery of our ICT infrastructure and providing technical assistance to our staff. We have recently invested heavily in our ICT department with exciting new projects and opportunities funded by significant investment. Formed in 2003, Tarian is part funded by the Home Office, Welsh Government and the three Southern Wales Police Forces: South Wales, Gwent and Dyfed-Powys. The ROCU is a multi-disciplinary team made up of police officers and staff seconded from the three forces. The lead force for the region is South Wales Police. 

Where we operate:

Tarian operates across Monmouthshire, Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport, Cardiff, Rhondda Cynon Taff, the Vale of Glamorgan, Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot, Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Powys. 

With over 20 specialist units and capabilities, the teams within Tarian are dedicated to disrupting and dismantling Serious Organised Crime groups across the region. 

The role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated ICT Technical Project Manager to join our dynamic IT team.

To manage Tarian ICT Projects and workloads as allocated, in line with approved project management methodologies

Purpose:

Leading the delivery of complex technical projects, ensuring alignment between business goals and technology solutions whilst coordinating cross-functional teams to drive outcomes, manage risk and deliver value on time and within scope.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage technical projects from initiation through to delivery, ensuring alignment with business goals
  • Liaise with internal technical teams, customers and suppliers
  • Create and manage detailed project plans, budgets, and timelines
  • Mitigate risks and resolve project-related issues proactively
  • Complete the required paperwork
  • Report project progress to senior management and customers

Requirements:

Essential Qualifications

  • Must Educated to degree level or be able to demonstrate equivalent skills and abilities.
  • A formal project management qualification and experience of managing a major project.
  • Possession of a formal qualification in or at least a good working knowledge of current ITIL processes.

Essential Skills

  • Familiarity with Prince2 project management methodology.  

Essential Knowledge

  • Experience of managing a major project.
  • Experience in managing project staff and profiling financial budgets. 
  • Demonstrate an awareness of current Health and Safety legislation and practices. 

Decision Making 

  • Gathers, verifies and assesses all appropriate and available information to gain an accurate understanding of situations 
  • Considers a range of possible options, evaluating evidence and seeking advice where appropriate 
  • Makes clear, timely, justifiable decisions, reviewing these as necessary 
  • Balances risk, cost and benefits, thinking about the wider impact of decisions 
  • Exercises discretion and applies professional judgement, ensuring actions and decisions are proportionate and in the public interest 

Working with Others 

  • Builds effective working relationships with people through clear communication and collaborative approach 
  • Maintains visibility by regularly interacting and talking with people 
  • Consults widely and involves people in decision making, speaking to people in a way they understand and can engage with 

Where you’ll fit in:

The ICT Technical Project Manager will report to the ICT Operations Manager – TARIAN and work in conjunction with a central technical Programme Office for Technical Programme Delivery in accordance with local & corporate priorities. 

You’ll be part of a small team who work a mixed environment of on-premises and working from home.  Your role will predominantly be 9-5 Monday – Friday with occasional weekend events.
