Salary: The starting salary is £53,459, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.
The salary is broken down as £50,531 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £55,103. Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

The police vehicle fleet is an important physical asset. It enables officers and staff to do their job, carries key equipment required, and provides safe transportation for the public / prisoners.

The complex needs of modern policing requires a wide range of vehicle types. We operate a fleet of over 5,200 assets on the road and river, as well as over 1,000 pedal cycles. London is the most complex and diverse city in the UK, and our fleet is reflective of that. We currently have over 220 different types of vehicles supporting all operational commands including armed response vehicles, HGVs, patrol cars, motorbikes and pedal cycles.
Customers can be broadly grouped into three strategic pillars – Frontline Policing, Met Ops & Performance, and Counter Terrorism / Specialist Operations. Collectively this covers pan London requirements as well as national CT responsibilities.
The overall fleet requirements and volumes are owned and governed by operational leaders at the Strategic Fleet Board. Operational teams are accountable for the volume of fleet required to undertake their roles, and Fleet Services support and enable effective decision making through provision of information and technical / industry knowledge.
Working within the Technical team this exciting role ensures that the Fleet is kept to the highest standard.
Key responsibilities
- Technical Standards - Developing, monitoring, and evaluating of the MPS Technical Standards for service, maintenance and repair. Ensure improvements identified are implemented specifically relating to: Maintenance, Driving MPS Vehicles, Telematics, Security, Specialist safety inspections and Technical Information Instruction. Creation and implementation of TIIs
- Technical liaison - Collaborate with technical service leads to ensure the implementation and delivery of the MPS Fleet Strategy in partnership with internal and external workshops and suppliers. Technical liaison with manufacturers.
- Fault / issue escalations - Accountable and making decisions on fault / issue escalations in terms of vehicle safety, vehicle suitability for service, engineering decisions and recommendation to senior management as a SME. Vehicle fault replication / tests beyond road regulations
- Maintenance schedules - Examine all technical service requirements activities to ensure maintenance of the MPS fleet is carried as per agreed standards, meeting MPS requirements and contractual agreement. Help to establish schedules and the correct schedules for particular vehicles / vehicle roles
- Quality inspections - Perform quality inspections to identify, evaluate and escalate risks and issues related to site premises, supplier delivery of service and appropriate actions are taken to ensure meeting authority requirements and fleet is fit for purpose.
- Compliance audits - Design and agree monthly based plan for compliance audits (including re-calls actions) across vehicle administration, maintenance and repairs to ensure all the technical service requirement activities are undertaken as per the MPS standards. Conduct regular visits to all operating locations to check vehicles and undertake fleet/compliance audits, adopting best practice and educating teams.
- SIIs - Utilise problem solving methodology to evaluate, report and document Special Incident Investigations (SII) to ensure MPS standards are upheld and undertake complete audit trails as well as provide recommendations/process improvements are sought internally and externally.
- Technical information systems – Maintain technical information systems. Identifies changes in technology requirement and use of it correctly (diagnostic, compliance with Manf requirements) and legislation which will effect MPS vehicles.
- Continuous improvement - Identifies and implements service enhancements from a customer (User) perspective which will deliver service performance improvement and contributes to vehicle availability, safety and value for money and security. Drive culture of continuous improvement to deliver service performance quality, efficiency, value for money and operational developments.
- Effective Relationships - Build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, suppliers and end users while ensuring the highest level of operational service delivery to ensure efficiency, value for money and a positive user experience
- Ensuring that internal and external compliance is maintained, and vehicles are for for the varied roles that they complete.
