Police Staff Assessor

Now is an exciting time to become part of the Core Policing Skills Training Team, responsible for training and assessing newly recruited Police Officers, Transferees, Re-joiners, PCSOs, and Special Constables.

Being part of our team means having the invaluable ability to collaborate with colleagues to problem-solve and share ideas, all with the common goal of supporting the development of student officers.

With a wealth of experience across the team, there is always someone willing to offer guidance, ensuring both you and your student officers continue to grow.

The work we do directly impacts the quality of policing by equipping officers with the skills and confidence they need to provide outstanding public service. From delivering essential training such as tutor courses and PEACE courses to supporting Special Constables, our role is fundamental in shaping capable and professional officers.

At its core, this role is about building trust and confidence—not only with student officers but also with supervisors, tutors, and colleagues. Leading by example, maintaining professionalism, and handling confidential information responsibly are key aspects of the role. Recognising both development opportunities and outstanding work ensures that our officers are continuously learning, improving, and delivering the highest standards of policing to our communities.

In March 2023, we achieved the largest uplift in police officer recruitment in our history. Our team plays a vital role in equipping these officers and staff with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their roles. This is a highly rewarding opportunity to support the next generation of policing professionals at Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

We deliver training through various Police Constable Entry Routes, including:

  • Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA)
  • Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP)
  • Degree in Professional Policing
  • Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP)

Our training approach blends classroom-based learning with online modules, and we’re always looking for innovative ways to enhance our training and assessment methods. We need someone proactive and adaptable to help shape how we develop our people.

The team work Monday to Friday, with occasional weekends for Special Constable training or operational needs.

If you don’t already hold a Level 4 teaching and/or Level 3 assessing qualification, we’ll support you in gaining these within 18 months of starting.

You will train and/or assess as required across the force area. Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Plan learning interventions to train and develop staff (conduct training needs analysis as required)
  • Preparation of lesson plans and supporting materials.
  • Deliver training on a group and one to one basis.
  • Plan assessment programmes and assess individuals against identified national and organisational standards.
  • Document evidence of assessment decisions and give feedback in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Complete validation and evaluation processes in accordance with departmental quality assurance guidance.
  • Keep up to date on changes in legislation, force policy and learning methodology.
