Statement of expectation for the role: To lead on communications for two of City of London Police’s nationally funded units, IFED and PIPCU.

Vetting level required: MV/SC

Location: Guildhall Yard East (minimum of 3 days a week in the office)

Salary: £36,040 plus £6,710 London Weighting per annum

This role is open to all Police Staff / external candidates who meet the essential criteria of the person spec, regardless of current grade.

Description of Department:

The City of London Police are the national Lead Force for Fraud, which accounts for over 40% of crime, causing misery to victims and economic harm to the economy. An opportunity has arisen to join the Corporate Communications Department and lead on a portfolio of insurance fraud and intellectual property fraud.

About the role:

You will work within the Communications team to deliver a media liaison and communication service; both proactive and reactive. You will lead on all communications activity for two of the force’s nationally funded units: the Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) and the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU). You will need to build and develop positive working relationship with key partners and stakeholders to proactively promote the collaborative work of the funded units and drive organisational goals.This includes supporting live investigations, promoting crime prevention and awareness campaigns, developing media strategies, and handling press enquiries.

Additionally, you will manage press office activity such as handling media queries, facilitate and manage filming, delivery of media training to internal stakeholders, and ensure the media office is fully supported (particularly during major incidents and busy periods).

You will be required to take part in an out-of-hours on-call service for which you will be remunerated. This will involve providing an emergency, reactive press service, approximately one in every six weeks.

Essential Criteria

Skills

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) to enable the post holder to deal with people at all levels, both in and outside the organisation.

Good planning and organising skills with the ability to multi-task and work under pressure in a fast-moving environment.

Excellent written communication skills to enable the post holder to draft media releases write internal and external articles and prepare clear and concise briefing documents.

Comfortable using digital technology, including adding articles to the internet and intranet as required.

Knowledge and experience

Extensive experience of working in a busy, high profile press office and managing media engagement for national, regional and b2b issues is essential.

Sound knowledge and understanding of media standard operating procedures and communication guidance and protocols.

Sound knowledge and use of social media in a communication role.

Experience of internal communication is desirable.

Types of Qualification(s) needed:

Educated to degree level or experience in a similar role for a minimum of five years.

Desirable Criteria:

Experience of internal communication.
