We are now accepting applications for new recruit police constables! 

We are looking for people with passion, drive, enthusiasm and a commitment to stop crime, protect people from harm, and help those in need.

As a police constable, you will be at the heart of protecting our local communities. Although a physically, mentally and emotionally demanding role, it is hugely varied and is truly one of the most worthwhile and diverse careers available. You will face many different scenarios that will test you more than ever before. You will protect the vulnerable when they need you the most and you will serve the public by building confidence and trust in the local communities that you serve.

From day one you’ll be highly trained and supported throughout your policing career with us, initially enrolling onto our traditional learning programme which will provide you with a blend of practical “on-the-job” experience and classroom-based learning. You will then join your colleagues on the beat where you will continue your learning and development, whilst undertaking operational day-to-day police duties.

Are you eligible to apply?

You must meet at least one of the criteria below to apply.

  • Hold a level 3 qualification (or higher). This must be equivalent to an A Level qualification in two subjects/NVQ level 3; or
  • Possess a policing qualificationapproved by the Sector Skills Council for the Justice Sector; or
  • Be currently serving as a PCSO. You will have completed your PCSO Action Checklist, passed your probationary period at the time of application and be up to date with all mandatory training; or
  • Be currently serving as a Special Constable. You will have attained independent patrol status and will consistently have completed sixteen hours per month, You will need to be up to date with all mandatory training; or
  • Be currently serving with, or have previously served with the Armed Forces. You will have served for a minimum of two years, and your service must have been within the last five years. You will have an exemplary reference; or
  • If you are able to demonstrate sufficient competence in Eastern European languages, Arabic, Far Eastern Languages, Romanian and Bulgarianwe would be particularly interested in receiving an application from you; or
  • We are also keen to encourage applications from individuals who can competently communicate in British Sign Language and Makaton;or
  • If you are competent in any other languages, please contact the PC Recruitment team to discuss further.

Competence in a second language will be tested throughout the recruitment process.

In addition to meeting the above, you must meet all of the below criteria at the time of applying.

  1. You can apply at the age of 17, although you won’t be appointed until you are 18.
  2. You must have a full driving licence. You must not have 9 or more endorsable points on your licence at the point of applying or at any point throughout the recruitment process.
  3. You must ensure that you are physically fit for the role.  Endurance will be tested during the selection process.
  4. You must not have been unsuccessful at Online Assessment with any police force within the last three months.If you have been unsuccessful you must wait three months from the date of your assessment centre before you can apply.  This is three months at the date you apply.
  5. You must have been a resident in the UK for the last three years continuously.
  6. You must be a UK, EU or Commonwealth Citizen, with no restrictions on your stay in the UK.

Applications will not be accepted if you do not meet the eligibility criteria.
