Digital Forensic Unit Technician
The successful candidate will conduct forensic examination of computers and mobile digital devices for evidence, in support of criminal investigations. To provide technical support to other investigators in order to give the Force an effective response to the investigation of all crimes that contain a digital footprint.
CORE WORK AREAS:
- Arrange delivery and collection of evidential items in liaison with officers. Record the movement of evidential items into and from the department, to ensure proper continuity of evidence.
- Conduct physical examinations of items submitted for examination, disassemble, carry out forensic acquisition of data in accordance with best practice and national guidelines, and reassemble. Record all processes accurately and contemporaneously, in written format or electronically, and also by photography.
- Conduct preliminary forensic processing of acquired data for example, identifying drive letters from Mounted Device registry entries, mounting and carving of designated file types, indexing of cases, identification of encrypted material, and BIOS and time zone checks.
- Attend crime scenes when required, to carry out searches for digital evidence in either an overt or covert capacity.
- Provide advice and guidance to police officers who are planning searches or premises where digital evidence is known or believed to be present.
- Contribute to the mainstreaming of digital investigation knowledge and techniques by supporting and delivering presentations and seminars as required.
- Record contemporaneously all forensic processes and produce accurate and detailed reports and witness statements to support police investigations.
- Contribute to the acquisition and upkeep of ISO accreditation of the Unit and validation of the techniques and processes employed.
- A large volume of this work will involve the viewing of indecent images of children and images of a sexual and violent nature the post holder must be aware of this and understand the nature of the role.
- Repair mobile phone devices, obtain and maintain a level one qualification in phone repair.
- Analyse material found on phones and complete SFR1 reports and provide updates to OIC.
- Conduct property audits and complete destruction processes for property waiting for destruction.
- Provide guidance and support to new starters by supporting them with training and supporting them towards becoming competent.
Salary
Grade SG1 £33,264 - £37,692
Shift pattern
The standard shift pattern for the role is shown, however flexible working patterns will be considered on a full and part-time basis. Applications will be considered on an individual basis and all requests must meet the organisational need as well as individual need, which can be determined with the successful applicant.
Monday to Thursday 08:00 - 16:00, Friday 08:00 - 15:30
