Role: Detention Officer

Department: Custody

Scale: SC3/4

Salary: £25,526 pro rata. Once Training successfully completed & signed off from the Line Manager, the salary will move to SC4 £26,106 - £28,653 plus allowances.

Location: Clough Road, Hull or Birchin Way, Grimsby

Hours: 37 Hours per week (Full-time) To follow a shift pattern which covers 24/7 per week and 365 days a year.

Contract: Permanent

Humberside Police are looking for a highly motivated individual to join them in their Custody Suite.

As a Detention Officer, you will support the Custody Sergeant in the care and custody of detained persons, observing requirements of the police and criminal evidence act (PACE), Force policy and APP.

The post holder will be required to provide a high level of care and welfare of detained persons and their property throughout their period of custody within Humberside Police.

The role of the detention officer carries various tasks such as booking in and out arrested persons, Testing procedures which will involve drugs, intoximeter, DNA and fingerprints.

You will be confronted with behaviour that is both abusive and violent; this can be of a graphic and distressing nature.

 

 Key Responsibilities:

Booking In Procedure

  • Undertakes the creation of the detainee’s assessment, identifying any issues that may impact on the safety and welfare of the detainee using the appropriate systems and informing relevant internal and external bodies i.e. NOC, Interpol.
  • Uses advanced questioning techniques to clarify the detainee’s current state of health and well-being to record an effective risk assessment taking into consideration previous detention records/PNC markers, if applicable.
  • Undertake searches or assist with searchers of detained persons who can be volatile and unpredictable. This can include strip searching occasionally in unsanitary conditions to ensure the detainee cannot harm themselves or anyone else they come into contact with.

 

Procedure Whilst in Custody

 

  • Undertakes a broad range of testing procedures i.e. drugs, Intoximeter, DNA, fingerprints etc. to support evidential process ensuring all documentation/processes are compliant with procedures.
  • Takes photographs, urine samples and footwear impression etc. in accordance with Force guidelines/legislation, undertaking PROMAT procedures as and when required. Ensuring correct procedures are undertaken when dealing with hazardous materials, body fluids and other noxious substances.
  • Undertakes one to one monitoring and assessment of exceptionally vulnerable or high-risk detainees ensuring the welfare and safety of detainee, providing information on external support agencies
  • Escorts detainees around the custody suite/other detention related areas as and when required adhering to Force procedures.
  • Undertakes regular assessments of detainee, monitoring any changes in behaviour that may impact on the safety and well-being on the detainee whilst in detention.

 

Booking Out Procedure

  • Completes exit assessments on detainee ensuring all records are correctly updated and endorsed and accurately reflects conditions of detainee’s release from custody i.e. prison recalls and bail requirements.
  • Ensure offence building is fully completed and validated before submission, identifying any anomalies/errors and reporting these to Custody Sergeant.
  • Completes person escort records ensuring relevant bodies i.e. CJU, Security, Magistrates court, CPS are notified and all property is accounted for and booked out.

 

Additional Tasks

 

  • Undertakes a broad range of administrative related tasks associated with the smooth running of the custody suite, CCTV observations, setting up of the Virtual Court, cross referencing and validating information against other police information systems i.e. PNC, Command & Control, making all associate bodies are aware of detainee circumstances i.e. Immigration Services, UK Border Agency, Social services, Interpol.
  • Management of the Control Desk within the suite, responsible for controlling entry and egress from custody, liaising with appropriate adults, solicitors, i24/7 checks etc..
  • Maintaining adequate stores and consumables necessary for the effective operation of the Custody Suite. This involves undertaking routine stock checks and placing timely orders.
  • Provide first aid treatment as required, in accordance with training received, including the use of AED (automated external defibrillator) and other provided first aid equipment.

 

 

 

What the role requires:

  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Be willing to work towards and pass a recognised first aid course.
  • Experience of working with the general public and dealing with potential conflict situations.
  • Previous administration experience incorporating a wide range of duties such as administrative procedures, telephone queries, record keeping etc.
  • Excellent communication skills to deal sympathetically but positively with tact and diplomacy.
  • Assertive and confident approach in dealing with detainees when problems/conflict arises.
  • Possesses an appreciation of the need for confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision when required.
  • Carries out tasks in an accurate and methodical manner with an eye for detail.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritise workload.
