Role: Digital Forensics Support Volunteer

Location: Melton, East riding of Yorkshire

Hours: 1 day per week during university holidays 8am-4pm (some flexibility around this can be considered).

Contract: Volunteer

Duration: Initially for 12 months but may be extended

Start date: Summer 2025

 

Humberside Police are offering new and unique Voluntary opportunities within their Digital Forensic Command. The teams specialise in extracting and analysing data from phones and computer devices as part of ongoing criminal investigations.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in industry whilst you are studying. It will also enable you to decide if this is a future career for you and place you in the best position possible to be successful in securing a permanent role in this arena after graduation.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Triage and examination of mobile and computer devices for a police investigation.
  • Maintain & develop software applications/scripts for parsing data, maintaining SQL databases, and management systems, including the development of new features in existing applications where allowed.
  • Assist in developing software specification documentation.
  • Review and understand existing software specification documentation.
  • Identify customer requirements, providing advice on the best solution to solving the evidential matter.
  • Document and justify decisions.
  • Have an awareness of the NPCC Digital Principles and relevant law such as IP Act, PACE.

 

Due to the nature of work involved, you may occasionally come in to contact with graphic or distressing material. Full welfare support will be provided.

 


Desirable Qualifications/Experience/Personal Qualities:

  • A proactive, creative and innovative mindset with strong attention to detail
  • Strong verbal, written and diagrammatical communication skills to liaise with colleagues, and investigators, and digital forensic technicians.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of IT user interface design
  • Demonstrate knowledge of object-oriented programming
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Python
  • Demonstrate knowledge of HTML/CSS
  • Demonstrate knowledge of JavaScript
  • Demonstrate knowledge of PHP
  • Demonstrate aptitude to solve problems with devices which behave not as expected

 

Skills and experience you will gain:

  • Auditing of examinations, ensuring correct exhibit referencing is in place, relevant forms and authorities are in place for examination of a mobile / computer device
  • The student will receive training on the use of MSAB XRY Kiosk software, enabling them to complete logical extractions of mobile devices as part of an investigation
  • The student will receive training on the use of MSAB XAMN software, enabling them to analyse the result of the mobile examination
  • The student will receive training on the ADF Digital Evidence Investigator software, enabling them to successfully triage computer and peripheral devices as part of an investigation
  • Receive bespoke training and support relevant to the role of digital forensics and investigations

It is not likely that closing dates will be extended, other than in exceptional circumstances and would need to be with the permission of the Recruitment Manager and Line Manager of the role.
