HP - Dog Section Constable (External)

Role: Dog Section Constable 

Department: Specialist Operations Unit 

Location: Melton

Hours:  40 hours per week      

Contract Type: Permanent

 

Role Purpose:

Provide proactive and reactive assistance in support of all operational officers and specialist departments by appropriate use of Police dogs: to locate and retrieve evidence or offenders, to control potential and actual disturbances, and to enhance officer and public safety. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

- Respond promptly to requests for a Police dog, supplying professional expertise, tactical advice and operational support to front line officers.

- Conduct searches using general purpose or specialist dogs in support of local officers: to expediate the location of missing persons and the arrest of offenders: and to support local officers in their investigation and responses to incidents.

- Positively deals with tasks which support the wider SOU and Force threat and risks, this includes roads based criminality, casualty reduction and activity to protect vulnerability members of communities.

- Support the Armed Response Teams to offer a less than lethal contingency in relation to deployments.

- Provide a source of specialist advice to operational Policing units on the deployment of dogs, contribute to the development of appropriate strategies and tactical plans in support of front line initiatives.

- Promote and deliver educational talks and displays to colleges and members of the public: to acquaint them with the roles and skills of police dogs, and to support the development of positive relationships between the Police and public.

- Undertake the proper care, training and handling of general purpose and specialist dogs: to ensure the health, well being and operational effectiveness of the dogs. Ensures that kennels, equipment and vehicles are maintained to the highest of standards.

- Must abide by the APP Dog manual of guidance, Force SOP’s in relation to dogs, Force Dog Training and PDR Objectives

- Performing such other duties as reasonably correspond to the general character of the post and are commensurate with its level of responsibility.

Skills and experience:

- Must be a qualified Dog Handler and maintain licencing of a General Police Dog.

- Is confident, resourceful, and able to accept responsibility in the appropriate circumstances.

- Works with a minimum level of supervision and has the ability to use own initiative to resolve issues.

- Demonstrates a sound working knowledge of all basic policing legislation, policies and procedures.

- Must possess exceptional communication and decision making skills to be able to deal with people at all levels, often in confrontational, delicate or distressing circumstances.
