Our organisation is made up of more than 40,000 passionate and dedicated officers and staff working across the city 24/7. The fast pace of the Met means the comms team is often driven by live events, which makes this an exciting and rewarding position with the opportunity to operate strategically but also work on evolving and high-profile issues.

We’re looking for a strong and dynamic leader who is used to operating in fast-paced and complex environments and can hit the ground running. It doesn’t matter if you’ve built your career in press and media or specialised in internal corporate communications – we’re more interested in the right person with the right skills than previous job titles.

The Met’s relationship with London and our officers and staff has never been more important, so the right candidate is someone who can advise and challenge the Met’s most senior stakeholders, cut through the daily noise and lead teams in gripping the most crucial work. Given our public profile, a strong understanding of and interest in current affairs is crucial.

This role will oversee three vital elements of our mission:

  • Ensuring our diverse and complex workforce understands our organisational priorities, are equipped with the information and tools they need and continue to feel confidence and trust in our senior leaders.
  • Driving the creation of innovative new internal campaigns steeped in insight and data to support widespread culture and behaviour change, increased performance while rebuilding morale and pride in our service.
  • Overseeing the management of the Metropolitan Police Service brand and development of a sophisticated in-house design service, equipping our wider team and workforce with the corporate branding and collateral required to deliver the best possible service to London.

Key result areas

  • Lead the team in generating new ideas and identifying innovative channels to reach our people, while simultaneously improving methods to evaluate our impact.
  • Build a team culture which inspires colleagues to be visible and active across the organisation in turn building relationships and finding stories.
  • Oversee rebuttal and response on our internal channels to our 45k workforce.
  • Improve the political and policing knowledge of the team so that they instinctively understand how to communicate with a large and diverse workforce often on sensitive issues.

Campaign delivery and brand management:

  • Oversee the planning, implementation and delivery of first-class internal behaviour change campaigns to continue changing our culture, increase performance and deliver on our organisational priorities.
  • Responsible for contract and supplier management where required, creative and content production agencies, branding and a programme of internal events.
  • Develop the integration of the Met’s graphic design and brand team into the wider comms unit, better incorporating design and brand work into day to day delivery.

Leadership/working relationships:

  • You will lead a team of up to 11 staff through two direct reports with a focus on continually driving up standards, performance and morale.
