Registered General Nurse with an interest in Occupational Health

Department: People Services (PES)

Scale: NHS Band 7 Salary: £47,810 - £54,710  FTE (Depending on experience)

And Scale: NHS Band 6 Salary: £38,682 - £46,580   FTE (Depending on experience)

Location: Priory Road, Hull

Hours:  NHS Band 7 – 37 hours over 5 days

              NHS Band 6 – 22.5 over 3 days

An exciting opportunity has arisen for us to expand our Occupational Health team and recruit two nurses to join us at Humberside Police in our brand new Health and Wellbeing Centre at Priory Road in Hull. They will assist the other members of the Occupational Health team in the provision and development of an efficient, effective and pro-active Occupational Health & Wellbeing Service that facilitates the Force’s compliance with statutory obligations and contributes to the achievement of the Forces’ objectives by maintaining a healthy workforce and maximising attendance at work.

The band 7 post holder will carry a management referral caseload and work alongside other team members to support medical screenings, vaccinations and health surveillance. This role is ideal for a qualified Occupational Health Nurse who has extensive experience within medium/large organisations and is confident in the delivery and management of the full remit of Occupational Health, with the aim of promoting a healthy workforce, maximising attendance levels and who can give specialist advice and guidance to supervisors, commanders, and departmental managers.

The band 6 post holder will work alongside other team members to support medical screenings, vaccinations, health surveillance and basic management referrals for issues such as physiotherapy. This role is ideal for a registered nurse who has experience within Occupational Health or a nursing role involving assessment of health needs. The candidate will need be able to work independently and be a confident decision maker.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing a caseload through management referrals, liaising with management of all levels, and writing reports giving comprehensive Occupational Health advice (band 7)
  • Advising on pro-active measures which are designed to promote a healthy workforce.
  • Improving levels of attendance at work through the implementation of initiatives aimed at maximising attendance.
  • Providing specialist health/medical advice, guidance and support to supervisors and commanders/departmental managers.
  • Giving advice, guidance and support and carrying out work in such a way as to ensure that health, safety and wellbeing legislation is not breached.
  • Ensuring the protection of the organisation from possible liability claims caused by the workplace. 
  • Be involved in the process of writing and updating relevant policies and procedures relating to all aspects of the OH Department in line with the Oscar Kilo Occupational Health foundation standards and the College of Policing Workforce Prioritisation Guidance.
  • Administrating vaccinations such as Hepatitis B
  • Providing post contamination incident advice and care as required
  • Supporting the Occupational Health Associate Nurse and Technician in pre-recruitment medical screening

What the role requires:

  • Registered adult nurse with 3 years experience post registration nursing experience.
  • Occupational Health qualification at degree or above level (for the Band 7 post)
  • Proven nursing experience working in an Occupational Health environment in a medium/large organisation. 
  • Ability to interpret and analyse medical information.
  • Ability to work independently, under pressure and meet set deadlines
  • Access to transport to travel the force area, and the successful applicant will hold a full driving licence.
  • Ability to make and justify routine decisions using initiative and judgement through the analysis of medical information.
  • Appreciate the importance of confidentiality.
