Police Staff Investigator (Offender Management)

Prospective officers and staff must be held to a higher standard of behaviour and accountability than members of the public, and that therefore their right to privacy can be fettered in certain circumstances. This is to ensure that members of the police are fully aware and accountable for the unique powers entrusted to them and the standards of professional behaviour they swear to uphold. 

You will be working within the Local Offender Management Unit within West Midlands Police, which is a friendly team responsible for reducing re-offending and managing the risk posed with the highest risk offenders. The post is Pan Birmingham based – Bournville, Stechford, Handsworth and Sutton Coldfield. 

Your role as Police Staff Investigator (PSI) requires you to manage your own workload on a daily basis under the line management of a local Offender Management Inspector. You will be a confident member of the team, supporting in collaboration with partner agencies, skilled in technical location of the outstanding offenders with the intention to reduce any risk of re-offending and safeguarding the public. 

You will be required to have contact with members of the public, other internal departments and external organisations whilst representing the force in a professional manner. Police Staff Investigators, aligned to offender management, are expected to adopt a multi-functional approach to enable them to respond to various requests that are processed by the department. This will include, collaboration with probation to prepare prison release plans, consideration of disclosure for safeguarding purposes, interrogation of all police systems to locate individuals who are outstanding for criminal matters and supporting the department with interviews, file build and investigation tasks. 

You will put to good use your excellent IT skills, with includes the full range of Connect, MS Office, as well as having the ability to learn new software packages as they arise. You will also need to demonstrate good communication skills and a high level of integrity and confidentiality.

  • Previous experience of producing clear, concise and accurate reports
  • Experience of working in an environment dealing with the public
  • Experience in utilising all WMP IT systems
  • Investigation and evidence gathering experience
  • Experience of working in a multi-agency environment, working with partner agencies
  • Police offender Management experience, including licence management and compliance, breach processes and recall processes. 

Desirable skills

  • Working knowledge of confidentiality and data protection issues
  • Previous experience in criminal law and criminal justice system
  • Working knowledge of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act
  • Knowledge of police policy and procedures in relation to the role
  • Experience of dealing with conflict

Vetting

Successful applicants will be required to pass Recruitment Vetting and Counter Terrorism Clearance scrutiny prior to commencing their role, this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.

Medical

Appointment to this role will be dependent upon successfully medical checks, which may include a drugs test and if required a fitness test.

Hours

36.5 hours a week, 08:00 - 16:00
