We are looking for someone to #JoinUs as a Digital Forensics IT technician in our Digital Forensics Unit, Cardiff. Could you be who we are looking for? 

About the team/Department you will be joining:

  • The Digital Forensics Unit (DFU) provides supporting evidence products to front line staff, following the examination of a wide variety of digital devices, such as mobile phones, Tablets, Computers, Drones and Vehicle telematics.
  • The DFU is centrally located in Cardiff, but has several satellite offices across the force, comprising of over 40 members of staff, using a wide variety of digital forensic tools on bespoke forensics workstations, connected to the dedicated forensic network, working to current ISO accreditation standards.
  • The successful candidate with be based in the Cardiff office with general working hours of 0800 to 1600hrs Monday to Friday on a flexi contract. 

About the role and your key responsibilities:

This is a unique opportunity for candidates that have experience in both Digital Forensics and IT support, to join our Digital Forensics Team as an IT technician, with a chance to maintain and progress the technical development of the unit, alongside providing assistance and resilience to the Digital Forensic examinations dealt within the unit on a day to day basis. This will involve a variety of tasks and projects in a dynamic digital policing environment, including maintenance and installation of hardware and software updates in line with National Enabling program (NEP), management of forensic network protocols for secure forensic environment and server management through use of Windows server 2019 & Linux distributions. 

The successful candidate will provide IT maintenance of the Units infrastructure, assist in the progress of the unit, through identification and installation of new bespoke Tier 3 forensic methods, in order to keep up with advancements in Digital forensics.

They will also be expected to provide reliance to the unit, by conducting forensic examinations of the ever expanding horizon of digital technology, which will assist in the identification, prevention and detection of criminal activity. As such, the successful candidates will be expected to have an understanding of a vast array of digital files encountered during an examination, being able to present their evidential findings to peers and a court, which will include highly disturbing material. 

What skills and experience do we need you to bring to the role:

The candidate will need to be highly computer literate, knowledge of secure network protocols and server management, with a minimum 2:1 computer forensics degree or related qualification, ideally with some experience of computer forensics programs (such as Encase, Access Data and XRY etc.), knowledge of secure network protocols and server management 

The successful Candidate must be willing to undergo vetting to MVSC Vetting.

Please note, if you are subject to an ongoing PSD investigation, you appointment or placement in the role may be delayed pending an outcome. Whether the role is held open will be considered on a case-by-case basis
