The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key ResponsibilitiesThe trainee detectives will be embedded within the Coaching Investigation Units and hold their own individual workload. As a coach you will usually coach around three trainee detectives simultaneously subject to staffing levels, while they are line managed by the Unit’s embedded DS’s.
You and your learners will work alongside the same CID and Domestic Abuse Team rota; therefore, you will need to be able to recognise investigative opportunities for them to become involved with, whilst maintaining good relationships and lines of communication with the appropriate divisional supervisors.
You will be proactive and have the ability to work with minimal supervision, managing conflicting priorities and ensuring all appropriate stakeholders are regularly updated.
Whilst you will not hold your own investigative workload, you will be responsible for the progression of your learners’ investigations and expected to provide on-going direction and support in collaboration with the Unit’s supervisors.
You will be expected to maintain your PIP2 accreditation through the work you complete and by attending relevant CPD throughout the year.
Each learner will have a portfolio, and your role will include seeking opportunities for them obtain evidence which will help them complete this.
Skills & Experience- You must be PIP2 accredited and have recent operational experience as a Detective or PIP2 Investigator
- Hold or be willing to be trained to the National Standard in assessing within the police sector (PSAS)
- Skilled in using questioning, listening and non-verbal communication techniques to give, elicit and receive feedback and to overcome communication barriers.
- A thorough current working knowledge of investigations and the PIP process.
- Able to provide effective developmental feedback to peers.
- Able to apply an understanding of human behaviour to the identification of barriers to performance and learning, and to identifying appropriate developmental actions.
- It is essential that you have a current working knowledge of local force investigation models and that you know what best practice looks like.
- To be resilient and be able manage the time and workloads of both yourself and the learner is essential. Particularly the selection and management of policing opportunities to develop and enhance the student’s operational competence.
This role attracts a Market Rate supplement of £5000 (subject to annual review)

Surrey Police have now established three PIP2 Coaching Investigation Units at Reigate (Currently Wray Park), Guildford and Staines, with the function of supporting our new recruits, in addition to serving officers seeking to transition to an investigative pathway, to achieve a full accreditation as PIP2 investigators. With patience, perseverance, coaching and assessing skills, you can be a part of a team that is responsible for the future detective constables.
This is a fantastic opportunity to not only develop the Detectives of the future, but to also invest in and develop yourself. Coaching will give you a unique perspective on managing the welfare of others as well as an understanding of how to mitigate the pressures your tutees will experience.
Applications are invited from all PIP2 accredited personnel who have current, or recent operational skills, with the motivation and commitment to develop the next generation of Detectives. As the learner Detectives work alongside an allocated CID rota, you will be following the shift pattern of your learners.
Due to the nature of coaching, there may be some requirement for you to vary your shifts from time to time as well as showing flexibility with attending and supporting other force wide PIP2 DCUs.
