The Role

Are you a Detective Sergeant with operational experience, sound knowledge of criminal investigative techniques and child safeguarding, and experience in leading the investigation of serious or complex crimes?

Would you like a new challenge to work as part of a team investigating the most serious cases of on-line offending involving people who use their computers and digital devices to download or distribute indecent images of children or groom children for a sexual purpose?

You will manage a team, be able to prioritise the team’s workload and react to fast time intelligence to target those who offend online.

You will form part of a three-sergeant team with your primary role in relation to developing and assessing intelligence prior to deployment.

A pre-employment well-being questionnaire will also be completed to assess suitability of deployment.

Key Responsibilities

Develop expertise and good practice in relation to the identification and investigation of On-Line child sexual abuse.

Provide support to investigators in other departments involving online offences by suspected Paedophiles and Registered Sex Offenders.

Provide expert and dedicated support in relation to the investigation of child sexual abuse.

Provide a focal point in the liaison between Surrey Police and other existing Agencies and Force High Harm Perpetrator Units.

You will supervise and lead a team in the following areas: Pro-active investigation of offences involving the making and distribution of indecent images of children and online offences of inciting children to engage in sexual activity.

Identification, proactive targeting and investigation of suspected paedophiles who are engaged in online networking with other paedophiles and those who groom children for a sexual purpose.

Examination of Indecent Images of Children (IIOC) that have been recovered during the course of Police investigations in order to identify potential victims, offenders and locations of note. Gather, collate and disseminate Intelligence in accordance with Force and National Policies to ensure that databases kept within force are provided with accurate and current information.

Form close working relationships with other professional bodies and agencies in order to facilitate the sharing of specialist assistance and to reciprocate with the highest quality of service in the cases that fall within their field of responsibility.

Where appropriate, to support colleagues in the High Harm Perpetrator Units in the management of registered sex offenders.

Skills & Experience

It is essential that the post holder has a proven track record in the supervision and investigation of serious and complex crimes.

It is essential that the post holder possesses a sound knowledge of criminal investigation techniques and has demonstrated the ability to use them.

It is essential to have knowledge of National and Force policies concerning the use and dissemination of intelligence.

It is essential that the post holder possesses the skills to operate and interrogate computer systems in use throughout the force for operational purposes.

It is essential that the post holder is able to demonstrate a good understanding of the technologies used in online enabled child abuse and the digital forensic processes used to investigate them.

It is essential that the post holder has a sound knowledge of legislation relating to paedophile offences and recent experience in investigating offences of a sexual nature. It is essential that the post holder displays sufficient depth of character and sensitivity in order to be able to deal professionally with disturbing cases involving children.

The post holder must display a depth of awareness regarding the sensitive issues involved in the teams work and be able to highlight and deal with areas where support to colleagues is required.

It is essential to have a good knowledge of the Force Public Protection Policies and Procedures.

It is essential to be able to demonstrate tact and understanding and be able to discuss sensitive matters openly.

Good communication skills both oral and written, and the ability to produce clear, concise and logical reports, appropriate to the needs of the reader.

It is desirable to have completed SCAIDP training.

It is desirable to have a working knowledge of other agencies procedures operating in the field of public protection.

It is desirable that the post holder is able to demonstrate recent experience in multi-agency working, and have the capability to develop and maintain effective working relationships both within and outside our organisation.

It is desirable that the post holder displays an ability to work with minimal supervision. Be prepared to attend sessions with occupational health department at six months intervals.
