The Role & Key ResponsibilitiesThis role is F graded but increases to G grade when qualified to Level 5 (12-24m).
Are you ready to join a small but crucial team working to keep communities safe?
While this role might not always be in the spotlight, as a DOCO, you’ll play a vital part in crime prevention and public safety, helping to reduce long-term demand on public services.
We are seeking a dedicated and motivated individual to join us as a DOCO, which also incorporates the responsibilities of a Crime Reduction Advisor (CRA).
This role involves a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact by preventing crime through smart design, with the support of structured NPCC training and accreditation.
Role Overview: As a DOCO, you’ll be at the forefront of promoting Secure by Design (SBD) standards and the principles of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED).
You will work closely with partners, architects, and developers to ensure that crime is designed out of developments from the start, increasing public safety and reducing demands on police and public services.
Your expertise will help shape safer environments, preventing crime, rather than inadvertently designing it in, which can have long-term consequences for communities.
In this role, you will also support some of the most vulnerable victims of crime, as well as survivors of domestic abuse, through the Sanctuary Scheme—a vital program that helps keep survivors safer in their homes.
You’ll provide guidance to ensure effective safety measures are implemented, offering support where it’s needed most.
Key Responsibilities:
- Promote Secure by Design (SBD) standards and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles.
- Collaborate with partners, architects, and developers to help design crime out of new and existing developments.
- Advising the most vulnerable victims of crime, to reduce the risk of further harm and to increase their feeling of safety as well as supporting the Sanctuary Scheme, by advising on safety measures for domestic abuse survivors.
- Use the OSARA problem-solving methodology to address complex issues in crime prevention. • Represent the police in multi-agency meetings, providing expert advice on crime reduction.
- A good working knowledge of and preferably experience in using the OSARA problem-solving methodology.
- An understanding of SBD and CPTED principles, with the ability to apply them effectively in various contexts (structured training will be provided).
- Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).
- Excellent communication, persuasion, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with partners, architects, developers, and community members.
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, managing priorities and handling complex cases with minimal supervision.
Training and Development:
Structured NPCC accredited training will be provided to the successful candidate, which when completed are recognised with formal qualifications, along with ongoing opportunities for professional growth and CPD within the field of designing out crime.
If you are passionate about making communities safer through innovative design and strategic planning, as well as a passion for keeping the most vulnerable people safe through bespoke involvement, we would love to hear from you.
Apply now to join a team making a lasting difference in public safety.
