The Role & Key Responsibilities

From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference.

It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe.

This is an important role through which the successful candidate raises awareness of anti-social behaviour (ASB) and hate crime in the community and with partner organisations.

You will be coordinating the appropriate police recording actions are taken for all ASB and hate crime incidents, following up internal and national processes and ensuring supervisor reviews are completed and systems updated.

You will be working closing with key partner organisations, including Statutory Authorities and other agencies around those ASB and hate crime responses, through daily communication both in person, attending meetings and through electronic communication routes – both telephone and email.

You will act as a point of contact for individuals and communities, building relationships to increase trust and confidence and encourage reporting of individual concerns, community tensions and hate crime incidents, and will also be an internal point of contact giving advice to colleagues and sharing information, primarily with the Neighbourhood Policing teams, but also across Sussex Police.

You will review and manage the ASB and Hate Crime email accounts for certain crime types, liaising with Prevention Sergeants to ensure appropriate tasks are undertaken.

Key Responsibilities

  • The aim from these roles is to improve our policing response to AS and Hate Crime by working with ASB and Hate Crime Single Points of Contact (SPOCs) and the Liaison Officers, partner organisations (including voluntary and community sectors).
  • Reviewing and auditing the district response to ASB and hate crime incidents to ensure compliance with Sussex Police policy.
  • Responsible for researching and interrogating force systems to identify ASB and Hate Crime incidents and repeat victims.
  • You will develop links and networks alongside support providers, to establish a local ASB and Hate Crime Network for voluntary and community groups and partner agencies and promote and circulate ASB and Hate Crime information and resources to relevant service providers, sharing best practice, and encouraging increased reporting. Attending multi-agency meetings as directed to achieve the same end.
  • Maintaining a thorough and up to date knowledge and understanding of policy, good practice and legislation relating to Hate Crime and equalities work and acting as the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for police officers, staff and partner agencies.
Skills & Experience
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, including the ability to prepare information to present to a wide range of people (both internal and external), adapting style as appropriate.
  • Ability to influence and persuade agencies, supporting resolution of problems and issues.
  • Proven IT skills, including Microsoft Office and use of social media platforms.
  • Team-working is critical as is the ability to use initiative and work with limited direct supervision and be able to self-motivate and manage own workloads.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and have an understanding of Data Protection and Freedom of Interesting issues.
  • Experience of working with voluntary statutory, social and community groups.
  • Ability to interrogate and research Force systems and identify issues.

Further Information

The role will be based at Crawley Police Station but on occasion there may be a need/opportunity to work from other force locations, attend external multi-agency meetings and some limited home-working may be possible, with notice.

Where required to travel to other force locations/external sites, travel expenses would be paid in accordance with force policy.
