Are you passionate about helping others? Join Wiltshire Police as a Special Constable and help to keep Wiltshire safe. We are recruiting for our next cohort of Special Constables to begin training on 26th April 2025.
About the role: Special Constables are volunteer Police Officers. They hold the same powers as Police Officers and work alongside them to prevent and detect crime, wearing identical uniform and issued with the same personal safety equipment and communication devices.
What will I be doing: After completion of training, as a Special Constable duties can include:
- Neighbourhood policing
- Response policing
- High visibility foot patrols
- Supporting victims of crime
- Helping to tackle anti-social behaviour and alcohol related disorder.
- House to house enquiries
- Helping safeguard public safety and security at local or major events
What do I need: Being a Special Constable is a challenging and rewarding role. We are looking for honest, respectful, and motivated individuals who want to do something meaningful in their spare time, helping ensure Wiltshire is a safe place to live. If you think you have the qualities and skills to serve we want to hear from you!
Are you eligible:
- You must have a FULL UK manual driving license.
- You must be aged 18 or older.
- You must be a British citizen, an EC/EEA national, or a Commonwealth citizen or foreign national with no restrictions on your stay in the UK.
- You need a minimum of three years of continuous residential history in the UK to meet vetting requirements.

- Training
The initial training period lasts 20 weeks and this is conducted through a combination of evenings and weekends, online and in person at Devizes Headquarters. (Dates for planned training will be provided to you in advance of your start date).
Your training will provide you with the confidence to deal with many situations, develop your existing skills, but also expand on a range of new skills.
- Shift patterns and info
Special constables are asked to commit to a minimum of 16 hours a month.
You can select your availability by submitting an online duty sheet in advance, allowing you to manage when you are free to work. Additionally where there are events or operations, shifts for these are released for you to choose from if you are interested in supporting.
- Specialising/ opportunities
Whilst this is a voluntary role, Wiltshire Police value Special Constables and therefore provide opportunity to develop and specialise in a range of areas of policing. This will enable you to explore areas of interest such as Drone Units, Road Policing, Search Officers and Police Support Units to name a few.

Employer supported Policing is a National scheme owned by the Home Office. It is an effective partnership between employers, their staff and the Police Service, devised to support Citizens in Policing in their voluntary duties during working hours.
