Description of Department:

The department provides a variety of surveillance capabilities that are used against a range of serious and organised crime threats. Operatives covertly monitor subjects to gather evidence and intelligence about their criminal activity.

You will predominantly be deployed in London and the Home Counties, however you should be prepared to work throughout the United Kingdom depending on operational requirements.

We are seeking applicants who either have a current surveillance qualification or who can demonstrate the potential to successfully achieve this standard.

The application and interview will be tested under Level 1 of the College of Policing Competency and Values Framework. There selection process will include practical assessments.

Essential Criteria – including the behaviours that will be tested at application/interview:

  • You will have an understanding of part 2 of RIPA 2000 and relevant codes of practice.
  • You will be familiar with assessing threat and risk in dynamic environments using the National Decision Model.
  • You will have a strong team working ethic.
  • You will be willing to vary your hours of duty to meet operational needs, often at short notice.

Required Qualifications

  • Current level 1 surveillance qualification

Or

  • Current advanced driver and demonstrates sufficient potential to successfully complete surveillance training requirements [INTERNAL CANDIDATES ONLY].

Or

  • successfully complete driving and surveillance training requirements [INTERNAL CANDIDATES ONLY].

Note: external candidates must possess current advanced driving and level 1 surveillance qualifications.

Desirable criteria

  • Current police motorcyclist with desire to undertake surveillance motorcyclist training.

Selection Process

  1. Applications will be subject to a shortlisting process.
  2. Priority will be given to those with current surveillance qualifications who may be required to complete an assessment exercise depending on experience.
  3. Standard drivers who are successful at shortlisting stage will be invited to attend a driving assessment to determine potential to achieve advanced driving standards.
  4. Candidates without a surveillance qualification will be invited to attend an assessment centre which will consist of a practical surveillance exercise.
  5. Candidates successful in the above stages will be interviewed, based on the Competency and Values Framework at level 1.
