We are looking to appoint a Senior Forensic Laboratory Officer (Technical) to join Regional Scientific Support Services (RSSS) and be part of our laboratory team based at Calder Park, Wakefield. Regional Scientific Support forms part of West Yorkshire Police, serving the Yorkshire and Humber Police forces. The post will operate on the flexi scheme working Monday to Friday.
This is a new role to RSSS with the purpose of managing the technical aspects and quality requirements associated with a region wide service in the provision of forensic mark enhancement in the furtherance of crime investigations.
The quality standards the laboratory works to are the Forensic Science Regulator’s Code and ISO 17025, therefore, you must have experience of working in and environment with an ISO 17025 quality management system. You will have been trained to a competent level in forensic mark enhancement, which you will be expected to maintain once in post and it is essential that you have a science-based degree or extensive experience working in a laboratory.
This is a largely laboratory-based role but is suited to some home working.
As an effective team worker and leader, you will be working with the Senior Forensic Laboratory Officer responsible for the day-to-day management of the laboratory and will be expected to deputise for them in their absence. Therefore, it is desirable for you to have proven experience in the management and motivation of staff members. Also, you will have direct line management responsibility for the Forensic Laboratory Officer (ISO) and work closely with the Lead Quality Representative and the Accreditation and Standards Team.
Eligible candidates will have a full UK/European driving licence and be able to carry out visual quality control. Forensic marks form part of the evidential chain and experience of preparing evidential reports and statements is essential.
Owing to the nature of the role, you must have the emotional resilience to be able to deal with images and scenes of a disturbing nature and have the physical ability to lift and carry laboratory equipment and exhibits.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide biometric samples (fingerprints and DNA) for inclusion on the relevant elimination databases for policing purposes.
