About the team/Department you will be joining:
The Joint Scientific Investigations Unit (JSIU) provides a broad range of specialist forensic support services to both South Wales and Gwent Police Forces. The unit is made up of around 300 specialist police staff and officers employed in 11 specialist departments that provide support to investigations in specialisms such as DNA, Fingerprints, Drugs, Digital forensics, Forensic Imaging, Firearms and Crime Scene Investigations.
The Joint Scientific Investigation Unit (JSIU) has an exciting opportunity to join its operational Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Unit in the role of Crime Scene Investigator Supervisor based at the Fairwater CSI Hub Cardiff CF53AT.
We would like to hear from you if you are someone who will drive forward continuous improvement initiatives, contributing to the operational performance of the CSI team and its compliance with the Forensic Science Regulator’s Codes. You will need to assist in the roll-out and compliance of standards as set out within ISO: 17020 Accreditation for Volume Crime Scene Examination activities in the CSI hub that you will manage (and in time expanding the scope of accreditation to cover Serious and Major Crime Investigations).
The successful candidate will already need to possess substantial and wide-ranging CSI experience and have a significant knowledge of the application of forensic science and crime scene management principles to support investigations. They will also need to possess and demonstrate sound leadership skills to supervise a team of CSIs and support staff and the ability to influence and build good business relationships with local stakeholders.
About the role and your key responsibilities:
You will be required to lead, supervise, and manage the work of level 1 and level 2 Crime Scene Investigators, monitoring their progress, performance, and development whilst quality assuring all aspects of the department’s functions. You will be required take part in all types of scene investigations in a Supervisory capacity and also as a Crime Scene Manager (CSM) and where trained the role of Crime Scene Coordinator (CSC) in relation to major and serious crime cases. If not trained as a CSC, you will be required to undertake and successfully complete the nationally recognised training course
The successful applicant will be required to co-ordinate the effective and efficient deployment of local and regional Crime Scene Investigators. Attend major crime and volume crime scenes and where required other incidents where a Crime Scene Manager or Co-ordinator is required. To conduct examinations in line with force procedures, whilst ensuring compliance with the Quality Management System, ISO 17020, Forensic Science Regulator codes, ILAC G-19 and other relevant legislation.
The successful candidate must have a clear understanding of the role of the Forensic Investigation Unit and current technical forensic examinations with the ability to recognise and rectify any substandard or incorrect working practices.
The role includes both shift and weekend working requirements plus an additional requirement to undertake on call responsibilities, all of which attract the appropriate renumerations and allowances.
What skills and experience do we need you to bring to the role:
Skills:
- You must be required to work to guidelines and procedures, be self-motivated and be able to demonstrate strong supervision skills.
- Must be a competent Crime Scene Investigator and Crime Scene Manager
- They will also possess leadership skills to supervise a team of CSIs and support staff and the ability to influence and build good business relationships with local stakeholders.
- They will also possess and demonstrate sound leadership skills in order to supervise a team of CSIs and support staff and the ability to influence and build good business relationships with local stakeholders.
- You will be able to communicate and present information effectively to a wide range of people, utilising excellent negotiation skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and team working skills.

- The ability to use your own initiative.
- Proven problem-solving skills.
- The ability to use your own initiative, work under pressure and organise and prioritise workloads is essential together with a good knowledge of health and safety requirements.
Experience:
- Must be educated to ‘A’ Level standard or demonstrate equivalent skills and abilities.
- Must be a qualified level 2 CSI and have an in-depth knowledge of the accreditation requirements under ISO 17020.
- Must have recognised qualification in Crime Scene Management.
- If not already trained, you will also be required to attend and successfully complete a Crime Scene Coordinators training course.
- The successful candidate will already possess substantial and wide-ranging CSI experience and have a significant knowledge of the application of forensic science and crime scene management principles to support both volume and major and serious crime investigations across the business areas of the Joint Scientific Investigation Unit.
- The ability to use your own initiative, work under pressure and organise and prioritise workloads is essential together with a good knowledge of health and safety requirements.
- A good degree of self-motivation and personal resilience.
- The ability to use your own initiative.
The successful Candidate must be willing to undergo vetting to RV Vetting.
