Assistant Building Engineer

ABOUT THE ROLE
Due to internal promotion, we are looking for a new assistant building engineer to join our engineering team, and provide building services engineering support to West Midlands Police's built estate. This role is to support both the estates strategy, which involves the refurbishment and disposal of sites as well as acquisition of new, as well as the business-as-usual activities of the Property and Estates Management team. This role provides both practical engineering support and engineering-related administrative tasks.
Key responsibilities are:
- Working with others create and maintain a building and engineering record library to support the estates strategy and existing estate, including administering Building Information Modelling (BIM) data and systems.
- Receiving engineering documents, drawings and BIM models and correctly incorporate them in the property library, so they can be accessed and used by others. Maintain the quality and integrity of the library stock.
- Supporting construction by visiting sites to inspect the M&E works and ensure that installed equipment specification and quantity matches records held and that workmanship is to a good standard. Resolve or escalate any deficiencies. Work with stakeholders to identify and resolve problems. Witness related installation testing and commissioning, resolving or escalating any problems found. Ensure all relevant documentation is correctly entered in the library.
- Supporting project officers and colleagues in the Engineering Team with problem solving, progress reporting, and provision of models, data and record keeping, as agreed.
- Working in a safe and responsible way at all times, ensuring that WMP’s H&S and security policies are complied with, including - where required - issuing of permits to work, development of risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) and review of 3rd party RAMS.
- Maintaining full and accurate records relating to H&S, equipment quality checks, testing, commissioning and in use servicing. Produce reports and briefing notes on problems, defects, emerging opportunities or good practice.
- Managing minor engineering works, including specification, procurement and delivery within time and cost authority.
- Creating and modifying CAD drawings, as required; training to be provided if needed.
- Supporting engineering activities in the existing estate, to include contract management of one or more maintenance services.
- Assisting with, or be responsible for, engineering related administrative activities such as contractor vetting, compliance monitoring, BMS monitoring and data collection, M&E team equipment maintenance and calibration (this list is not exhaustive).
- Continuing to develop professional and technical skills, with a commitment to continued professional development including a willingness to acquire news skills and experience.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
- A qualification to HNC level in a relevant subject, or equivalent professional experience.
- Technical and practical knowledge of a wide range of building services.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and practices.
- Proficiency in the use of standard computer applications (Office etc).
- An ability to comprehend and structure a large quantity and range of different document types.
- Clear and effective communication, with a proven ability to inform, educate and persuade.
- Accurate and methodical and a good planner.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks in parallel.
- Ability to travel to sites within the Force area and the physical capacity to safely attend and move around construction sites.
- Eyesight (with correction) sufficient to be able to conduct visual inspection of work on construction sites.
Desirable Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
- Membership of a relevant professional body.
- A knowledge of BIM.
- Basic proficiency in AutoCad and Revit.
- Knowledge of public sector procurement.
- Familiarity with quality procedures in the construction industry.
- A willingness to be part of the on-call team, for which additional payments are made.
Note: A knowledge of BIM and using Revit, AutoCAD software is useful, but training will be provided if needed.

- Working hours generally Monday to Friday, 36.5 hours with flexi-time
- Occasional work outside flexi-time hours may be required
- Must be contactable at any time within reason in the event of an emergency
- This job is hybrid, based at the Logistics Centre, Perry Barr. Working location to be agreed with line management and as suited to the task at hand; working from home is supported where appropriate and in line with WMP's agile work policy.
Vetting: Successful applicants will be required to pass Recruitment Vetting and Counter Terrorism Clearance scrutiny prior to commencing their role, this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.
