Job Description

In this unique and interesting role of a Forensic Vehicle Examiner you will work in the Forensic Collision Investigation Unit for Warwickshire Police at Rugby Police Station. You will work alongside another Forensic Vehicle Examiner and a team of Forensic Collision Investigators. You will be providing mechanical and technical support when carrying out vehicle examinations which have been involved in serious or fatal road traffic collisions. Further vehicle examinations maybe required following the request of a Police Officer to confirm the roadworthiness of a vehicle which has been seized.

You will have use of a work vehicle to attend Police and non-Police sites within Warwickshire to carry out vehicle examinations. Tools and equipment including a digital camera will be provided to carry out vehicle examinations.

You will be required to attend the scene of road traffic collisions, should you be on duty at the time of a collision in which the Forensic Collision Investigation Unit is requested.

Further development maybe offered if the opportunity arises to be trained and become a qualified stolen vehicle examiner.

Further training and development opportunities will be discussed periodically.


Main Responsibilities

Conduct specialist mechanical and technical vehicle examinations on a wide range of vehicles from push bikes to heavy/large goods vehicles and plant and agricultural machinery. This also includes the examination of Police vehicles following a collision.

Identify causation factors of a road traffic collision, vehicle defects and offences under the construction and use legislation.

Provide in depth reports as an expert witness, confirming your findings following a mechanical examination to the Coroner’s Office or Courts.

On rare occasions, attend court when requested as an expert witness and provide expert advice to the Crown Prosecution Service and Legal Council on evidence relating to all types of vehicle examinations.


Required Qualifications and knowledge

Part 2 qualification in motor vehicle craft engineering or Level 3 qualification City and Guilds NVQ/IMI or equivalent in motor vehicle maintenance and repairs.

Sound understanding of vehicle systems.

Essential experience

Extensive experience in vehicle maintenance and repair from carrying out vehicle examinations to diagnosing defects and defect rectification.

Experience of using Diagnostic tools.

Essential skills

A full Uk valid driving licence.

Be highly motivated to work methodically when carrying out mechanical and technical investigations through to the completion of examination reports. Lone working will be part of this role, so you will be needed to manage your workload to meet deadlines.

Experience of using a range of Microsoft tools such as word, excel and power point programs to provide comprehensive technical reports.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to provide comprehensive technical reports.

Desirable qualifications, knowledge and experience and skills

Current or previous MOT tester.

Experience/qualifications of maintaining or testing Motorcycles, LGV’s, PSV’s or plant and agricultural equipment and machinery.

Experience/qualifications of maintaining Electric and hybrid vehicles.

Motorcycle or LGV driving licence.

Knowledge of construction and use legislation.

Knowledge of vehicle handling and dynamics.

Knowledge of road traffic legislation.
