Job Title: Pound Assistant

Salary: The starting salary is £35,385 which includes allowances totalling £2,928 and a 12.5% Shift Disturbance Allowance.

The salary is broken down as £28,851 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £31,011. Plus, a location allowance of £1,928, a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000 and a 12.5% Shift Disturbance Allowance.

If you like working outside in a role that’s different every day, join us here at the Met Police car pound. Here, we deal with all kinds of vehicles. They could be stolen, seized for motoring offences, or needed for forensic examination. Buses, supercars, ice cream vans – you never know what will come through our gates. But with our excellent training, you’ll be equipped to handle anything. As a Pound Assistant, you’ll oversee processing each vehicle that arrives. That means dealing with paperwork, inspecting for damage, monitoring recovery operators, and moving disabled vehicles using specialist equipment. You’ll also deal with members of the public. With back-office administration too, it’s a varied and interesting role. In this job, you could be working outside in all weathers. There’s also heavy-duty manual handling involved and a variable shift pattern.

If you’d like to join our team, you need to be fit and prepared to undertake Officer Safety Training and Emergency Life Support training. You should also have a full UK driving licence and good IT skills. On top of this, you must be ready to deal with any kind of vehicle. It’s important you can be patient and calm, even in difficult situations. If you’re happy working on your own or as part of a team, there may be a place for you in our Vehicle Recovery & Examination Service (VRES). Full training is provided, and you’ll have the chance to earn vocational qualifications.

Job Summary:

  • Monitoring loading and unloading of vehicles in accordance with statutory regulations, corporate and site regulations.
  • Processing of vehicles, including, confirming vehicle identity upon arrival, the accurate completion of vehicle removal forms, entering the information contained on the forms onto MPS systems and undertake various checks on internal and external programs.
  • Processing the movement of all vehicles that have been recovered to VRES Car Pounds to ensure all received vehicles are received, stored, and distributed in relation to the VRES operating procedures.
  • Use of specialist vehicle movement equipment, ensuring the correct operating procedures are always followed and completing all necessary paperwork in relation to this equipment. Reporting any faults found in the equipment to the 
    pound manager.
  • Undertake searches of vehicles and booking in found property in line with VRES operating procedures to ensure the Car Pound is safe from any dangerous items and customer property is stored properly to mitigate the risk of claims against the MPS.
  • Dealing with oil and fuel spills because of accident damaged vehicles in accordance with Health and Safety risk assessments and disposed of in 
    accordance with environmental legislation.
  • Maintaining and cleaning the Car Pound premises and equipment to ensure that the Car Pound space is fully utilised efficiently, and that equipment is operating effectively, thus mitigating the risk of faulty equipment causing injury or damage.
  • Comply and maintain site and corporate health and safety and security protocols.
  • Undertake a broad range of cleaning duties involving gritting the pound, cleaning equipment, clearing rubbish from around the site, inside of vehicles and within office areas.
  • Any other duties commensurate to the post as designated by the Pound Manager.
  • The post holder will be expected to work in all weather conditions.
  • The post involves a significant amount of heavy-duty manual handling.
