Job Title: Senior Reporting Fingerprint Examiner

Salary: The starting salary is £51,637, which includes allowances totalling £2,841.

The salary is broken down as £48,796 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £52,730. Plus, a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

The Metropolitan Police first began collecting fingerprint evidence in 1901. As our workload grows, we need to bring a Senior Reporting Fingerprint Examiner to our dedicated team. A leading professional in your field, you’ll take on a crucial role at our highest technical grade.  

This is an exceptional opportunity to be involved in high-profile and serious cases including counter Terrorism. The role holder will be working in Biometrics - Secure Operation Forensic Services within the Forensic Directorate. The team provides forensic services to Counter Terrorism Policing and other national security partners across the UK and Worldwide. The job holder will be a Senior Reporting Fingerprint Examiner, who has successful completed the fingerprint course to advance level and worked in a recognised Fingerprint Bureau. On a daily basis the job holder will be processing fingerprint enquiries of Counter Terrorism and national security matters. The role holder will be required to assess, examine, and maximise the forensic potential from crime scenes, exhibits submissions and cadaver.  You’ll also give the final independent verification and critical findings check of reported decisions, which means this role comes with great deal of responsibility. 

You’ll also be expected to present complex evidence and your expert opinion within the Criminal Justice System. You’ll draw on extensive technical knowledge, which will help you train and mentor the team’s more junior staff too. 

A qualified fingerprint expert with examiner training, you’ve successfully completed the expert witness course. You bring wide-ranging experience within fingerprint casework plus the ability to work well under pressure. You may be required to proffer an interpretative opinion on finger mark deposition and add value to the presentation of fingerprint evidence within the courts. This will require considerable experience and technical knowledge and communication skills to express yourself clearly and work as part of a team, you will share our motivation to serve a diverse, 8 million-strong London population.  

Please note that Forensic Services provides 24/7 operational support. This may require shift/rostered working and on-call arrangements. This is currently a non-shift role, however, occasionally, due to operational demand there may be a requirement/option to join the 24/7 shift teams which will attract 20% for the period of posting into a shift pattern.

The role holder will be required to:

  • provide a DNA sample and fingerprints for inclusion on the staff elimination databases.
  • be highly self-motivated with excellent communication skills (written and oral) and have the ability to work under pressure. The SRFE must be able to articulate their findings to fellow practitioners and non-practitioners.
  • be required to keep up to date with the progress of both internal and external developments within the field of fingerprints.
  • understand and accept the core principles set out in the H&S Policy in relation to your role, duties and responsibilities and implement those principles and requirements in day-to-day activities.
  • demonstrate effective visible safety leadership, understand H&S policy and lead compliance within area of responsibility. Implement the principles and requirements of H&S policy in your day-to-day activities and within the teams you work/manage.  Encourage open dialogue and feedback on safety issues.
  • work within the Forensic Service Quality Management System and actively contribute to the continuous improvement of the system by participating in quality assurance activities, engaging in internal and external audits, competence, and proficiency tests, reporting non-conformances, and proposing changes to improve the system.
  • comply with security policies.
  • comply with mandatory training requirements.
  • comply with and promote Metropolitan Police Service policies on diversity and inclusion both in the delivery of services and the treatment of others.

Vetting

This post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) level before taking up the post; with a willingness to undergo Developed Vetting (DV) once in post, if required.

Additionally, this material is of particular sensitivity to the UK and its distribution must be restricted to UK nationals. In approved circumstances dual nationals (of which one element is British) may also be granted access. However, in the event that potential conflicts of interest cannot be managed the post holder will not be able to see the intelligence material and will not be able to perform their duties. For the purpose of safeguarding national security and in line with Cabinet Office Policy, supported by Section 82(2) to (4) of the Police Reform Act (2002), applicants who do not hold or acquire Security Check (enhanced) (SC(e)) OR Developed Vetting (DV) clearance and meet the nationality requirements cannot be offered the post.

Following application review, successful candidates will be invited to interview.

External candidates will be required to complete a competency technical assessment at interview stage.

There will be a pre-interview task, candidates will be given 30 minutes to prepare a 10-minute presentation – details to be provided on the day.

The presentation will be followed by a structured interview which will be assessed against the remaining CVF elements:
