Job Title: Mechanical Engineer (Operational Support Unit)
Salary: The starting salary is £46,985, which includes allowances totalling £3,009.
The salary is broken down as £43,976 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £49,670. Plus, a location allowance of £2,009 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

The OSU (Operational Support Unit) provides Engineering Services to support front line policing. Our job is to help protect and police London using the latest technology to stay one step ahead of criminality and disorder. We predominantly support and manufacture specialist equipment for overt CCTV including mobile and static surveillance systems. We also provide support to specialist units within the Met manufacturing bespoke operational kit. To succeed, we need all kinds of technical support and specialist engineers behind the scenes manufacturing the tools to help fight crime. Our mechanical workshop designs and manufactures a wide range of equipment to assist all aspects of front-line policing. We are looking for a skilled and experienced mechanical engineer to join our dedicated team.
The successful candidate will have completed a mechanical engineering apprenticeship and have a minimum of 3 years’ experience working and operating manual machine tools. (CNC experience will also be considered).
Working to a mechanical workshop supervisor you will be tasked with manufacturing a variety of parts and assemblies whilst fulfilling all Health and Safety requirements. This is your chance to put your engineering skills to work in an interesting and crucial role.
The Met Police face all kinds of challenges so you never know what the next project might be. Our mechanical workshop hosts a variety of modern machine tools and equipment. The successful candidate should be experienced in turning, milling, sheet metal fabrication, welding and bench fitting. On occasions, you’ll have access to sensitive information about cases and projects. It's vital that you act with discretion and keep such data confidential. Please note that you may also be asked to work outside office hours and in challenging environments.
Successful candidates will be asked to complete a practical assessment based on the skills outlined above either before or after a formal interview.
