The Role & Key Responsibilities

From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference.

It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe.

Surrey and Sussex Forensic Investigations department has an exciting opportunity to join Crime Scene Services in Surrey as a Crime Scene Investigator (CSI).

In this role you will act as lead forensic investigator at crime scenes of all types. You will be expected to:

Carry out the forensic investigation of crime scenes and any other police related incidents as required, including post-mortem examinations following an unexplained death.

Seize exhibits in line with agreed protocols to maintain the integrity, continuity and security of the evidence for investigative processes and court proceedings

Take detailed photographs of crime scenes.

Develop and implement examination strategies within each investigation to assist the wider investigative objectives.

Produce detailed written reports that illustrate the scene's layout and evidence locations. Use your expertise and observations to understand the sequence of events.

Collaborate with police officers and forensic experts to interpret evidence and decide on examination strategies

Undertake crime scene management duties and provide support and guidance for less experienced staff acting as coach where required .

Present evidence at court and explain its relevance in a clear, unbiased manner.

Perform your duties across Surrey and Sussex, making an equitable contribution to the designated shift pattern and on-call rota covering a 24-hour period, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

Demonstrate a willingness to maintain competency and continuously develop in the role.

Be required to wear a Police Staff uniform as appropriate to the Force employer whilst on duty and maintain a smart appearance.

Be able to work within and comply with the appropriate measures required to maintain ISO accreditation standards. You will be required to undertake training and participate in the provision of auditing for accreditation purposes across Forensic Investigations when requested.

Uphold the values of the code of ethics. Our teams are held accountable for maintaining exemplary standards of professional behaviour. These are viewable on the College of Policing website.

This role includes salary progression from a grade F (£30,495 - £35,020) to grade G (£33,128 - £39,149) upon completion of a training and competency program.

Applicants who have attended an assessment day for this role in the last 12months need not apply again.

Skills & Experience

It is essential that candidates have a pass in both Maths and English GCSE or an equivalent qualification.

You must hold a current, full UK driving licence for manual vehicles, and will be required to pass an internal driving assessment to be authorised to drive police vehicles of the relevant class.

Applicants should be either educated to degree level or have evidence of transferable skills from a relevant role in which they have worked for at least 12 months. The relevance of your qualification and/or experience within this role must be demonstrated within your application.

You will need to be physically and mentally resilient, as you will attend traumatic and disturbing police-related incidents where persons may be deceased or have come to harm.

Many of the duties involve lone working, so you must be self-motivated and able to perform successfully without supervision.

You will be expected to independently develop examination strategies based on observations and investigative requirements.

Teamwork is key, so you will need to demonstrate the ability to work in a wider group.

You will need to be able to prioritise your work, be organised with your time, and have the flexibility to alter plans as priorities change.
