Job Title: FCIU (Forensic Collision Investigator Unit) Investigator - HC623092.
Location: Across Hampshire & the Isle of Wight and Thames Valley.
Salary: SO2, £40,383 - £42,612 per annum.
Hours: 37 hours per week working a shift pattern of Earlies and Lates, plus a paid call-out rota and weekend working.
Contract: Permanent.
Closing Date: Wednesday 28th January 2026 at 23:59 hours.
The post holder needs to be aware that there may be the requirement to work anywhere within Thames Valley, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight police areas.
Please allow the whole day for interviewing. The interview process will involve a series of assessments to ascertain a candidates potential ability to undertake the role of Forensic Collision Investigator. These assessments will include: basic Maths, Physics and English tests; an assessment on the candidates ability to ‘read a scene’; a 10 minute presentation and finally an interview. Depending on their background there may also be a brief driving assessment on the day to determine the candidates suitability to undertake an advanced driving course.
This role has been identified as requiring mandatory Psychological Screening.

The successful candidate will provide specialist expertise in the investigation of serious and fatal collisions as defined by the College of Policing APP guidance on ‘Investigating Road Deaths’. You will investigate serious injury and other complex and high profile collisions. With the consent of the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), the Professional Standards Department and under you line manager’s supervision, you will investigate fatal or serious injury police vehicle incidents that may occur within the JOU or another Force area.
Key Accountabilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Engage with, implement and abide by departmental procedures in line with the requirements Forensic Science Regulator Codes of Practice and Conduct and the International Standards Organisation (ISO) 17020/17025 standards to provide a quality service through accreditation.
2. To attend and gather evidence at the following types of traffic collision:
- Fatal or potential fatal traffic collisions.
- Complex or serious collisions where significant and essential information is likely to be gained from attending the scene in order to assist the investigation.
- Collisions involving an allegation of poor driving where an examination of the scene will assist in clarifying the situation.
- Police Vehicle Incidents (PVI’s) which fall into the above categories or are, in any way, contentious.
3. To collect, study and analyse evidence present at collision scenes and undertake relevant mathematical calculations in support of observations.
4. To compile forensic collision investigation reports using your range of skills, correct scientific principles and available evidence to determine the cause of the collision. To then present your findings at a Coroner’s Inquest, Crown, Magistrates or Civil Courts.

Competent Constable or Educated to QCF Level 4 or
experience deemed to bring the role to a comparable level.
To already hold or be willing to work towards obtaining the
University Certificate of Professional Development (UCPD) in
Forensic Road Collision Investigation. (Or equivalent)
All FCI’s will also be expected to a undertake a Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE) in their second year, plus any other additional courses deemed necessary by the Unit Manager to develop and maintain their CPD.
You will need to already hold or be prepared to attend and pass a Police Advanced Car Driver qualification.
To be able to demonstrate a good level of Maths, Physics and ICT skills.
Proven communication skills, both verbal and written.
Desirable
To have experience or an interest in a roads policing/law enforcement environment.
A sound knowledge of law and its practical application as it relates to driver behaviour.
