Location: Police HQ, Northallerton, with opportunities for hybrid working.

Salary:  £43,668 - £47,046 per annum. (NYP Salary Scale PO3 – 6)

Contract: Full-time, permanent.

Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday – Thursday 8.30am – 5pm, Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm

Following growth to our team, we are looking to appoint two qualified and dynamic Accountants to join the Finance team at North Yorkshire Police. These are exciting opportunities to play a vital role in the delivery of financial and management accounting services that support our essential public safety operations.

Accountant: This post will predominantly focus on managing revenue budgets and providing insights through monthly reporting, to guide internal decision making and planning. You will work closely with Budget Holders within Operational Policing and Business Support Services along with other stakeholders, to ensure the effective delivery of the organisation’s ambitions and priorities within available financial resources.

Accountant - Systems: This is a new post which will play a crucial role in the development and continuous improvement of our financial system. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining the financial system, leading on system upgrades, troubleshooting, and delivery of  advanced reporting to inform key business decisions and support statutory reporting. You will drive innovation, optimising the organisation’s use of Oracle E-Business to ensure accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.

While all our accountants are expected to be proficient in both financial and management accounting, and portfolios may be rotated, these vacancies primarily involve technical responsibilities in these areas.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead on your portfolio area, including financial governance and technical analysis.
  • Support the production and monitoring of Medium-Term Financial Plans and statutory accounts.
  • Provide financial analysis and advice to ensure the best use of resources, including cost modelling and trend analysis.
  • Manage a team of Senior Accounting Technicians and/or Accounting Technicians, fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture.
  • Ensure effective day-to-day financial management processes, including budget monitoring and compliance with regulations.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of enhanced financial systems and procedures.

What We’re Looking For:

  • You  hold AAT Level 4 or an equivalent qualification and  a part or fully qualified professional accountancy qualification (CCAB or CIMA) or are able to demonstrate equivalent experience and expertise.
  • For the Accountant - Systems role, you will have knowledge and practical experience of Oracle E-Business. 
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Good working knowledge of statutory and management accounting, as well as of financial process improvements.
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
