Job Title: Motor Claims Engineer, Insurance & Claims Services
Salary: The starting salary is £31,183 (pro-rata) which includes allowances totalling £1,707 (pro-rata).
The full-time salary is broken down, as £53,459 basic salary, which increases annually until the top of the scale £55,103. Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

We are hiring
The Met’s Insurance and Claims Services is an in-house, London based police claims handling team. We are part of Finance Services, within the Met’s Commercial Services function.
The team performs a critical role for Met through a claims management function, strategic insurance programme and related internal insurable risk and indemnity services.
We respond to legal liability claims against the Met, typically for road traffic accidents involving Met vehicles, including employer liability claims and for damage caused through forced entries to premises in the execution of warrants. The team also manages recovery of monies from third parties who are at fault in causing road traffic accidents involving Met vehicles.
We are now looking for an insurance motor claims engineer to join our team. This role exists primarily to assist the Claims Manager in the management of an effective motor claims third party recovery process. This is done by providing expert advice on assessing accident damaged repair costs required of Met vehicles following road traffic accidents involving third party vehicles.
You will apply your experience and understanding of technical standards in the collision repair services, to assist members of the Claims Team in the effective monitoring of motor claims spend.
We can provide you with a varied workload, including off site inspections.
Engineers applying for this position:
- Must have acquired recognised qualifications in a motor vehicle discipline as well as having an in-depth knowledge of motor vehicle estimating and valuation systems.
- Must have an in-depth knowledge of Thatcham and manufacturer vehicle collision repair methods, standards and differing vehicle construction.
- Must have a good understanding of the Insurance collision management process from collision report, alleged cause of collision, deciding whether to proceed with repairs or write vehicle off, as well as assessing likely final repair costs (including hidden costs).
- IT - Must have an in-depth knowledge of motor vehicle valuation systems (Glassmatix and Audatex), Thatcham vehicle collision repair methods and standards, a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Professional, especially Word and Excel with the ability to produce Management Information to reinforce projected cost savings for this role.
In addition, the successful candidate must demonstrate:
- The ability to identify and understand the needs of the business, as well as potential barriers, to ensure they are adequately accounted for.
- The ability to influence across varied internal and external stakeholder management group.
- Proven negotiation skills in securing reasonable costs for third party repair costs.
- Personal drive to maintain relevant technical knowledge and skills required to support front line operations and keep up to date with emerging technology and industry practices.
- Records of being result orientated, willing to take ownership for setting and achieving high standards and targets.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate both confidently and effectively on technical matters to internal and external customers.
- An excellent customer service attitude and approach.
- The ability to write technical reports and summarise key information for internal and external stakeholders, with appropriate costings.

- Motor Vehicle Repair and Maintenance BTEQ/NVQ
- IMI / IAEA Qualified/Near Qualified
- Full UK Car/Van Licence
Desirable qualifications or equivalent:
- Thatcham Vehicle Damage Assessor
- IOSH - Institute in Occupational Safety and Health
