Protect & Prepare Inspector - Counter Terrorism Policing
Rank: Inspector
Type: Full time
Closing date: 7th December 2025, 23:59
⇄ Secondment or transferee opportunity
The Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) network stretches across the UK. We work alongside our partners to obtain information and evidence to thwart terrorist planning and help bring perpetrators to justice.
Based near to Birmingham International Airport, Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands (CTPWM) coordinates the regional counter terrorist response and provides specialist support to police forces in Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Mercia and the West Midlands.
The Protect and Prepare department (P&P) forms 50% of the national Contest strategy and is responsible for supporting our regional forces to ensure their communities benefit from the most appropriate protective security to reduce the opportunity for a terrorist attack. Additionally, under the Prepare, we ensure our communities and partner agencies are in an effective state of preparedness, to mitigate the impact of any terrorist attack and facilitate recovery from such an incident.
This role requires Monday to Friday working, however, due to the nature of the role you will need a degree of flexibility to enable the department to respond effectively to intelligence and developing situations. You will be required to be part of an on-call rota for P&P and a weekend duty supervisor rota.
There is also a need for occasional travel around the UK CTU network, although this can typically be pre-planned. The role is generally based within the office, however, occasional remote working can usually be facilitated.
The role
The P&P Inspector leads both the Protect and Prepare team. These teams are made up of a mix of police staff and police officers, all of whom are highly skilled in providing advice and support to a wide range of partners on protective security, including the protection of critical national infrastructure. You’ll work with partners from other blue light agencies, military, local authority and other national organisations. In terms of Prepare, you will lead the team around effective review of national and local plans, testing and exercising within CTPWM and in support of our partners and around organisational learning, across the region.
Responsibilities
- Line management for Protect and Prepare supervisors and second line management for the teams (some based at off site locations).
- Second line management for CTPWM training and CATO functions.
- Providing written and verbal updates to SLT on workstreams.
- Delivering briefings to duty Supt and SLT on CT plans and revisions to them as and when they occur.
- Driving performance of this busy department, supporting your team of supervisors around effective prioritisation of work.
- Acting as support to DCI P&P on occasions where CTU stands up in response to high threat situations, effectively holding the position of P&P bronze.
- Attending relevant local and national meetings both remotely and in person, representing the department and on occasion, CTPWM as a whole.
- Leading the department on the response to emerging themes within counter terrorism policing.
- This is a demanding role, where effective multi tasking is essential. It is an interesting role, where every day is genuinely different. You will deal routinely with sensitive information and intelligence, both with our partners and internally.

We are a Disability Confident Leader - the highest level an organisation can achieve under the scheme run by the Department of Work and Pensions. As part of our commitment we operate a "Disability Confident Interview Scheme" - all candidates who declare a disability and meet the essential criteria for the role will be offered an interview.
It is important to note that there may be occasions where it is not practicable or appropriate to interview all disabled people who meet the essential criteria for the job. For example, in certain recruitment situations such as high-volume, seasonal and high-peak times, the employer may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people. In these circumstances, the employer could select the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job, as they would do for non-disabled applicants.
