The Dog Training Unit is currently part of the People Branch.The People Branch is responsible for delivery of all aspects of training for all GMP staff.
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering all aspects of dog related courses and subject to qualification could be involved in all training that is delivered by the Unit which is: Puppy Training / Development, GPD (General Purpose Dog), Specialist training which includes firearms detection, explosive detection and drug detection and all refresher and continuation courses associated with the above courses.
There is also course preparation time for updating existing courses and developing new courses as and when required and the ongoing maintenance of the small fleet of dog training vehicles.
The role also involves assessing dogs that are offered from members of the public, generally by a home visit, identifying suitable venues for dog training and on occasion assisting with the daily exercise of dogs that are kennelled at Hough End in the unforeseen absence of a member of the kennel staff.
Delivering and collecting dogs from different force areas is also a role requirement as is the need to take dogs to veterinary surgeons when the need arises.
The role of dog trainer requires a high level of knowledge of the canine world in order to identify problems that are faced when teaching dogs and their handlers.
Excellent communication skills are essential in this role as it is paramount to ensure that the handlers fully understand what is required from them and their dog in order to achieve the teams maximum potential, and also how to rectify any problems that arise unexpectedly.
The successful candidate must have a high level of fitness as a lot of training is carried out on open moorland and involves a lot of walking and running.
Flexibility is also essential as there is a need for the successful candidate to be able to identify the different training needs of all the dogs and handlers in force.
Due to the nature of the training it is also essential that the successful candidate can identify potential and imminent risks in order to carry out dynamic risk assessments and re-structure the training accordingly to ensure the safety of all concerned.

GMP have now aligned their recruitment process for Specialist Police Officer posts to the Competency and Values Framework. As a result of this change the Leadership Expectations assessment criteria have now been removed for this recruitment process.
