We have an exciting opportunity for two Building Maintenance Technician Apprentices to join our Estates and Facilities Management Team. The post holder must have an interest in building maintenance practices and hold a desire to learn and grow their knowledge, skills and abilities. 

The postholder will have an all-round awareness of the estate for South Yorkshire Police and be flexible in their approach to problem solving, looking for an appropriate and satisfactory solution.

The key focus of the role is customer service as well as the smooth and efficient operation of all SYP assets and plant in addition to providing a professional service.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist the Building Maintenance and Management team in the maintenance of Properties, Plant and Equipment.
  • Undertake the regular maintenance of drainage systems and associated equipment including clearance of blockages, internally and externally.
  • Undertake boiler cleans and 'ashing' out of commercial solid fuel boilers on pre-determined frequency as directed.
  • To assist in the compilation and maintenance of any required records such as mandatory H&S checks and tests; goods deliveries; utility meter readings and oil/wood pellet deliveries.
  • Upon receiving the relevant training receive deliveries of petrol and diesel as per the Petroleum Regulations and maintain relevant records associated with petrol deliveries and dips.
  • Upon receiving the relevant training assist SYP in complying with H&S responsibilities for Management of Contractors on site.
  • General Building Maintenance Technician duties as directed such as:
    • Documented weekly ‘walk-checks’ of the buildings, notifying the Estates and Facilities Helpdesk of any required works, maintenance and cleaning of light fittings, check deliveries of goods, canteen deliveries and stores and transfer to appropriate section/storage area in accordance with agreed procedures. Installing notice & wipe board’s/air wave & PAVA gas lockers and associated equipment.
  • Undertake/assist in cleaning of buildings, litter pick and sweep service yards, parking areas, entrances, external waste receptacles etc. Disposal of confidential/wastepaper & canteen waste.
  • Undertake and assist in office moves as and when required.
  • Update and manage work through the online platform Technology Forge, ensuring work is uploaded, progressed, and closed as needed. Liaise with Estates and Facilities Helpdesk team to ensure service is cohesively managed.

Skills and experience:

  • Attend and successfully complete a Building/Maintenance related college course on a day release basis. Hold the necessary qualifications to meet college course entry requirements. (Typically, GCSE grade A - C / 9 - 4, or equivalent in English and Maths)
  • Have an interest in Building Maintenance practices.
  • The ability to use Microsoft Office and Planned Preventive Maintained software.
  • Have a full Manual UK Driving Licence and the ability to pass a police staff driving test.
  • Ability to travel within the South Yorkshire police area, a driving licence is required and willing to use your own vehicle for work purposes if a force vehicle is not available.

A minimum checkable history of 5 years is required for this role and successfully undergoing recruitment vetting procedure is a pre-requisite of employment with South Yorkshire Police.

Field: This applies to roles that do have a base, however, due to the nature of their duties is required to travel to other locations. Due to the nature of these roles, they cannot accommodate flexible working from home on a permanent basis.
