Communications Officer – Dispatch Controller
Location: Fulford Road, Force Control Room, York
Contract: Permanent | Full time
Salary: Approx £39,135 - £42,075 incl. shift and weekend working allowances
Hours: 24 hour rotating shift pattern (2 days, 2 nights, 4 days off)
Closing Date: 9am on 28 November 2025
Training Course: Runs 6 July – 11 September 2026. You must be available for the full duration; annual leave cannot be taken during this period.

We will be hosting an online familiarisation event on Wednesday 26 November between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm.

What Does a Dispatcher Do?
As a Dispatch Controller, you are the critical link between the public and frontline officers. When someone calls 999, you’re the calm, decisive voice that:
- Assesses the situation and applies the THRIVE+ risk model
- Prioritises incidents and allocates resources
- Monitors officer safety and provides real-time updates
- Coordinates responses across emergency services
In short, you’ll be at the heart of emergency response -making split-second decisions that protect lives and support policing across North Yorkshire.

Key Requirements
- Essential: Previous experience as a Dispatcher in police or emergency services within the last 5 years
- Essential: Radio experience
- OR strong experience in logistics/traffic planning or similar with proven ability to manage complex operations
- Excellent decision-making and communication skills
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle sensitive information
- Flexibility to work a 24-hour rotating shift pattern
