The Opportunity - Join North Yorkshire Police as a Digital Forensic Technician

Are you looking to break into one of the most exciting and rapidly evolving areas of modern policing?  North Yorkshire Police’s Digital Forensic Unit is now recruiting for a Digital Forensic Technician — a hands-on, technically engaging role designed as the ideal entry point into the world of computer and mobile device forensics.  Whether you're just starting out or looking to pivot into a tech-driven policing career, this role offers a solid foundation with clear pathways for progression. As part of a supportive and skilled team, you’ll gain the experience and exposure needed to grow, develop, and move into more advanced roles within the unit.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Digital Forensic Technician, you’ll play a vital role in supporting the Technical Manager with the development and upkeep of our Quality Management System and core technical functions.

You’ll help shape and refine Technical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), contribute to validation techniques, and ensure all processes are optimised to maximise evidential yield.  You’ll be hands-on with digital devices—carrying out triage, pre-acquisition, and forensic imaging to prepare them for full forensic examination.  In addition, you’ll collaborate with the Quality Manager to maintain a well-organised library of documentation that meets ISO standards, supporting the unit’s accreditation goals.

Your technical expertise will also be key in updating forensic software and maintaining DFU hardware, helping the unit operate efficiently and effectively.

Who We’re Looking For - We’re seeking a motivated and detail-driven individual with a passion for technology and a desire to grow.

You’ll ideally bring:

  • Solid knowledge of operating systems and applications: Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS, Android
  • Demonstrated competency in handling digital devices
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities
  • Previous audit experience (desirable but not essential)
  • A degree in Forensic Computing, Computer Science, or substantial relevant experience

Training & Development - This role is designed as a stepping stone into the DFU. You’ll receive tailored training aligned with a Career Progression Plan to help you thrive in this environment.
