Job Title: Management Accountant

Salary: The starting salary is £60,893, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.

The salary is broken down as £57,965 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £63,230 Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Job Purpose

The Management Accountant is responsible for supporting the delivery of robust, transparent, and timely financial management information and insight, including monthly management accounts, forecasts, dashboards, and analysis of options to inform decision-making.

The role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial data, actively identifies financial risks and opportunities, and provides a clear narrative on the financial position, grounded in a sound understanding of the business groups and their objectives.

The post holder maintains collaborative, customer-focused relationships across the wider finance community, particularly with finance business partners, working across boundaries to ensure consistent and constructive support to the business.

Key Result Areas

  • Deliver timely and accurate monthly management reporting, providing financial performance updates and ensuring reports reflect an up-to-date and accurate view of the business area's position.
  • Produce financial analysis and insight that is forward-looking and proactive, using tools such as OAC and EPM (being implemented by MBS) to enhance forecasting, highlight risks and opportunities, and enable early corrective actions.
  • Interpret and advise on the correct accounting treatment of complex transactions, ensuring compliance with standards and policies and providing assurance on data integrity.
  • Lead and oversee the delivery of month-end processes, ensuring outputs meet internal deadlines, standards, and quality expectations.
  • Proactively recommend and influence corrective actions to budget holders based on variances, forecasts, and evolving financial risks, supporting informed financial decisions.
  • Contribute to external audit, statutory reporting and policy compliance, by ensuring accurate and timely information and collaboration with Financial Accounting.
  • Ensure effective financial controls are in place, maintaining high standards of accuracy in data capture and validation across systems.
  • Champion continuous improvement, sharing best practices, responding to stakeholder feedback, and adapting processes to improve service delivery and clarity.
  • Support and develop Assistant Management Accountants, providing mentoring, task oversight, and building future capability within the team

Scope for Impact

The Management Accountant plays a key role in maintaining financial integrity and providing actionable insight to business areas.

While not holding delegated financial authority, they are expected to proactively influence financial outcomes through recommendations, challenge data accuracy, and ensure timely delivery of reporting cycles.

They support the audit process, promote compliance, and use their insight to anticipate issues, helping budget holders and FBPs take early action.

Peak impact occurs during month-end closure and budget cycles, where autonomy increases.

Dimensions

  • Budgetary Responsibility:No direct financial authority, but supports financial oversight of portfolios between £5m–£50m, influencing decisions through analysis and forecasting.
  • Line Management:May supervise one or more Assistant Management Accountants.
  • Systems/Tools: Expected to use and help optimise OAC and EPM tools implemented by MBS for reporting, analysis, and forecasting.
