Job Title: MO19 Specialist Firearms Command - Firearms Enquiry Team – Firearms Enquiry Officer
Salary: The starting salary is £34,808, which includes allowances totalling £2,928.
The salary is broken down as £31,880 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £34,108. Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

This is an exciting time to be working as a Firearms Enquiry Officer (FEO) for the Metropolitan Police Service. The Firearms Enquiry Team is responsible for ensuring the safe and effective licensing of all legally held firearms, shotguns and explosives in London.
FEO’s are at the forefront of this and are key in helping make London the safest global city in a time of unprecedented change within the UK's largest Police Service.
The FEO role is to investigate the suitability of members of the public to have licensed firearms and to support the revocation of those licenses when necessary. Team FEO's are responsible for conducting robust enquires that help inform fair and transparent decisions regarding the granting, renewal and variation of shotgun certificates, firearms and explosive licenses.
FEO’S in general must be proficient in the handling of firearms, have a basic knowledge of core shooting disciplines, demonstrate a good knowledge of firearm licensing law, be a able to make sound dynamic risk assessments and prepare and conduct interviews. A working knowledge of the National Decision Model (NDM) is required.
The successful candidate will be required to complete training and mentoring associated to the role as a Firearms Enquiry Officer (including completion of the mandatory College of Policing National FEO course), drawing on existing experience and skillset (N.B. this is not a pre-requisite for the role).
This role requires travel across the MPS to conduct in person interviews and assessments.
What does the average day look like?
Core duties include:
- Investigate and review applications for a certificate/license and establish the applicant’s suitability to acquire, possess and lawfully use shotguns, firearms and/or explosives.
- Conduct interviews of prospective or existing license holders
- Contribute to the ongoing and continuous monitoring of certificate holders’ suitability to hold shotgun, firearm, dealership and explosive certificates, in order to accurately assess and respond appropriately to risks to public safety.
- Liaise with relevant colleagues and departments to provide protection, support and reassurance to those identified as at risk following the refusal or revocation of a certificate.
- Prepare reports and manage case files within best practice procedures to ensure an audit trail of fair and transparent decisions.
- Support the process of certificate holder voluntary surrender or revocation to maintain public safety.
