Salary: Career Graded 6 - 7, £29,055 - £34,329

Location: Agile, Ponteland Police Station and homeworking 

Hours/Contract: 37 hours per week, permanent

The role  

Here at Northumbria Police, we think our region is amazing! This could be the perfect time for you to join us in our Digital Department as an Infrastructure Engineer. 

You will play a key role in delivering a high-performing, cost-effective, and resilient network and security support service that underpins critical operational functions across the organisation. This includes ensuring that service levels are consistently met and maintained to support business continuity and operational effectiveness. Your responsibilities will involve carrying out scheduled maintenance, installations, and patching activities to exacting standards, ensuring that all network components and security systems operate reliably and securely.

Through proactive support and technical expertise, you will help maintain the integrity and performance of the network environment, contributing to the overall stability and efficiency of the organisation’s IT infrastructure. 

What you’ll do 

  • Deliver ongoing support and maintenance for all network services - including WAN, LAN, WiFi, and security products - ensuring seamless connectivity from user access points to datacentre operations that power the force’s critical systems.
  • Participate in the implementation and recovery procedures, including contributing to a 24/7, 365-day out-of-hours support rota, to swiftly respond to and resolve any emerging or critical service outages.
  • Proactively manage escalated issues with third-party suppliers, maintaining clear communication channels and ensuring resolution activities meet agreed service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Monitor infrastructure performance to identify potential issues and trends, ensuring services consistently align with SLAs and deliver a customer-focused experience.
  • Support the planning and installation of new systems as part of structured implementation projects, contributing technical expertise to ensure successful deployment.

What you’ll bring 

  • Proven experience in 2nd line infrastructure support or equivalent, with hands-on expertise in maintaining a wide range of network and security equipment, including IP addressing, DNS, DHCP, network troubleshooting, and the installation of switches, routers, and cabling systems. Skilled in wireless technologies (including WiFi 6), resolving complex building-related issues, and producing accurate documentation and network diagrams.
  • Experienced in using IT Service Management (ITSM) tools to accurately record issues and configurations, supporting efficient service delivery. Skilled in day-to-day network support and configuration, working directly with users and Data Protection staff, and proficient in using diagnostic tools to analyse and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Demonstrable experience working in an IT operational environment, effectively prioritising and managing an active call queue to meet service level agreements (SLAs), while arranging and supporting network infrastructure changes to accommodate site moves and reconfigurations.
  • Proven experience of identifying solutions to problems. Being able to articulate these into clear and understood – free from technical jargon - benefits to users and stakeholders.
  • Experience with diagnostic tools understanding of network limits and Cabling technologies.

This is a permanent role subject to a six-month probationary period.
