Public Order Instructor Metropolitan Police Service
Description of Department:
The Metropolitan Police Specialist Public Order Training Centre is a specialised training and instructional facility focused on delivering Public Order training to Officers from the MPS, City of London and British Transport Police.
Instructional delivery follows the College of Policing with additional regional variations and the department emphasizes teamwork, discipline, and adherence to human rights standards. Scenarios are practiced in simulated urban environments to ensure realism and operational readiness. The goal is to produce highly skilled personnel capable of maintaining public order while minimising harm and upholding democratic principles.
Additionally, the dept provides specialist operational capability to support the London region (and nationally) through Public Order PSU’s, AEP (baton gun), Working at Height, Protestor Release and POPSA.
Description of Role:
Applications are invited for Constables to join MPSTC MO6 in the role of Public Order Instructor. This is a rewarding role with successful candidates having the opportunity to contribute to the London regions commitment to Public Order policing both in the delivery of Instructional capacity and Operational capability.
The key responsibilities successful candidates will be required to undertake are;
- Delivery of high-quality Public Order Training in line with current lesson plans, legislation, MPS policies and College of Policing APP.
- Ensuring training records are maintained in line with MPS policy.
- Ensure all students are aware of the safety management systems.
- Provide a role specific safety briefing to all participants/visitors to the site.
- Ensure that all necessary Health and Safety equipment is available to conduct training.
- Comply with the published Safe Systems of Work and Risk Assessments.
- Dynamically assess the training and location, taking prompt and appropriate action to deal with any significant hazard.
- Operate and take care of all equipment in accordance with workplace policies and manufacturer’s instructions.
- When incidents concerning health and safety occur, ensure that the appropriate support and medical assistance is provided when necessary.
- Report and record all notifiable incidents/hazards accurately and completely in accordance with policy and procedures.
- Ensure, as is reasonably practicable, that all PPE required is present, serviceable and correctly worn.
- Ensure, as is reasonably practicable, that all injuries are reported before the student leaves MPSTC
- Operational Deployment as required in line with training
This application is open to Substantive Constables.
If successful at the paper-sift stage candidates will be invited for an assessment process.
Period of Posting: minimum 2-year tenure.
Location(s): Based at Metropolitan Police Specialist Training Centre, Gravesend, Kent.
Eligibility: Substantive Constables who are one of the following;
- Currently accredited Public Order Instructors
- Currently accredited command band trainer
- Currently accredited POPSA and Public order Instructors who are hold a current Level 4 teaching qualification and are willing to undertake command band training
- Currently accredited POPSA willing to undertake the level 4 teaching qualification and command band training course
- Currently accredited public order instructor, willing to undertake the level 4 teaching qualification and command band training

Current ELS / PPST in date
And one of the following;
- Currently accredited Public Order Instructors
- Currently accredited command band trainer
- Currently accredited POPSA and Public order Instructors who are hold a current Level 4 teaching qualification and are willing to undertake command band training
- Currently accredited POPSA willing to undertake the level 4 teaching qualification and command band training course
- Currently accredited public order instructor, willing to undertake the level 4 teaching qualification and command band training
Desirable Criteria:
Level 3 AET Teaching Qualification or equivalent qualified
Current Public Order Public Safety Advisor (POPSA)
Current Evidence Gatherer
Current Police Medic
Current Forward Intelligence Trained
Police driver at level 3 or above
